 The Crayfish Project |

As many of you know, I stared this spring attempting to breed crayfish. What started out as a breeding project however, has ended up as an interresting study of natural behavior. I started with 11 crayfish, I added 9 bait store minnows to the tank approximately a month later. Within only a few minutes, the crayfish started preying on the minnows, as would be expected. What I didn't expect was that once they had consumed about 4 of the minnows, they stopped eating them entirely. I was perplexed by this because the remaining minnows were not keeping their distance or otherwise avoiding the crayfish, on the contrary they would routinely right up to them, even bumping them from time to time. So I wasn't entirely sure why the crayfish had stopped eating them, until an unfortuneate minnow injured itself durring a water change. Almost immediately it was torn apart and consumed by the crayfish. I then realized what had been going on from the beginning. The crayfish were consuming the sick and weak minnows only, to keep the shoal strong and healthy. When all the members of the shoal were healthy, they would not eat them, even when I removed the normal food supply for a week. This brings into question everything I've ever learned about fish compatibility, and makes me want to do some further experiments. |

| Frozen Food versus Dry Food |

I was doing some research comparing frozen foods versus dry foods. I thought that the frozen, being in the usual form that fish eat, would be more beneficial. I was surprised to find this is not necessarily the case.
Taking information from mongabay.com, regarding nutritional needs, I compared the nutritional value of frozen versus dry foods. The frozen foods did not even come close to supplying the nutritional needs. In fact, it appears that frozen foods should count as a supplement or occasional alternative to dry foods.
I found that the nutrients supplied in the frozen foods were either excessive or deficient. Why the disparity? I don't understand why normal, natural foods would be less beneficial than the dry versions, with the exception of additional vitamins and minerals. Any thoughts? Hve a look at the information below and see what you think.

| To divide, or not divide.... |

Hi there...
I'm confused.
I had three Bettas, two male, one female, sharing a 10g tank w/ two divider screens. Males were on the outside, female was in the center section. About 6 months ago, one of the males died.... so I removed 1 divider, and the two remaining fish have been sharing the 10g.
I am confused as to the need for the divider. Will a male and female cohabitate OK in the tank together w/o divider, or will there be mayhem? I've heard answers both ways. Divide, or not divide?

Yay baby. MY angelfish has spawned. The female is around 4 inches from nose to tail and 6 inches high. While the male about 1 inch smaller. I think theres over 500 eggs for such a big female. I'll get a picture later.  |

| Lighting for my 3 foot tank |

If there is one thing I don't know much about its lighting. Could anyone give me any advice as to what would be a suitable lighting system for my tank? The cheapest option being the best in my case. My tank is 3 foot and is lightly planted. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way I have been using a desk lamp for lighting.  |

Has anyone heard of converting a swimming pool to a freshwater pond? I just moved into a house with an old swimming pool, and figure the cost of getting it swim ready would be more than turning it into a freshwater pond. I still want to be able to swim with my fish. I prefer to hand feed them and with this I would be able to attach food to my body and let them eat off of me. |

| 350 Gallon Tank Question |

I am thinking about getting a 350 Gallon fish tank for my garage. I plan on trapping my neighbors and using the tank much like a cell.
I am choosing a tank because I want to be able to fill the tank with snakes and scorpions for my trapped neighbors.
Any advice would be helpful! |

Hey I am getting a coal grunter off of one of my friends and I am just interested to know if anyone else here has kept one of these fish? I know its probably not very likely however I would love to here more about them in the aquarium.
