Just looking for some ideas for substrate. and yes I'm looking for the best choices. Any suggestions are more than welcome.

I REALLY like the eco-complete substrate. It's super easy to work with, the black color looks great and really brings out your fish, and the plants really grow like crazy. It's the best substrate in my books as far as ease of use and maintenance goes. I haven't tried flourite, so I can't compare unfortunately.

I have searched for eco-complete or fluorite and I have had absolutely no luck finding them. The idiot in one of our local stores didn't even have the slightest idea what I was talking about. Where have you bought yours? I have a Petsmart chain store and then 2 locals and I had no luck. I was going to order some, but it costs more to ship an item of that weight.
Any suggestions?

I like to use Flourite in my planted tanks. It is a great plant substrate, color is very natural, but rinsing it is time consuming.

I had flourite in mind thanks guys. I think that with some luck my german ram tank will happen sooner than later.

Both petsmarts here keep the florite with the ferts and such. Black Onyx Sand is also good for plants.
Good luck with the rams, I sure do love mine. Here's a pic of my ram tank with the black onyx sand.

The black onyx sand works really well, this is what the tank looked like about 6 weeks ago. Havent added to much ferts to it. Just once a week on the flourish excel and flourish.

What kind of lighting do you have in that tank, susankat?
bartier - May 6, 2006 08:44 PM (GMT)
Did you add more plants between those two photos?
susankat - May 6, 2006 09:32 PM (GMT)
The lighting on this 10 gal is rather high, I have 2 10 gal sitting side by side with a 48 inch shop light over the both with 2 - 40watt daylight flor.
The only thing I did to the plants is took some of the baby tears that was floating and stuck a few stems into the substrate and a small piece of 4 leaf clover, added the rotalla to the back.
