Title: Brine Shrimp

Sergeant Major - April 17, 2006 10:40 PM (GMT)
I'm a little imbarrassed to admit this, but I've never tried to hatch brine shrimp before. I see an air hose on most hatcheries, but most write ups say it's just to mix the salt. I'm going to be using saltwater from the tank, so I won't need to mix the salt. So do I still need to use the air hose to turn the eggs or circulate the water?

Yes you still would need an aerator to toss and turn the eggs for u. Also they need light. The more light the Brine shrimp is given, they sometimes hatch faster for some reason.

Yes you will want something to turn the water, and I like to use a cheap air pump. You will want to keep the temperature of the water around 80F and having a light above the container helps. The brine shrimp also seem to hatch faster when kept at a warmer temp.

I'm actually hatching some brine shrimp at the moment. :D

Brine hatch faster under light because it supposedly gets them out of dormancy faster and makes them absorb the water fster, thus hatching faster. Lmao said faster enough there....

Well I ran a test batch yesterday with no air pump. Some hatched, but most did not... this time I'm running it again with an air pump. It's by a window, so it get's natural light, but the temp is only about 72, I don't have a heater to heat it with since they are just in an empty water jug. At some point I may invest in one of those hatchery deals that sits in the tank and the shrimp swim out on their own.

Yea, try looking for those. You won't have to deal with so much things. But I still wonder how they mangae to keep saltwater and freshwater seperated :D

Sergeant Major - April 19, 2006 01:36 AM (GMT)
I wonder the same thing, but it would be going into a saltwater tank anyway.

Then you won't have to worry much :D

:o It is all trial and error. WOW! Brine shrimp! I just bought feeder shrimp! I love how they swim! They are very happy. I love that you are trying something new and sharing it. I just bought 3 more scissortails, along with the feeder shrimp.

What kind of feeder shrimp is it? And how much are they?

Sergeant Major - April 20, 2006 12:19 AM (GMT)
Interrestingly, it's been 24 hours, and I can't see any shrimp swimming in my second batch where I did use an air stone. We'll see if they just havn't had time to hatch yet.

Well it depends on the temp of the water whether they hatch in 24hrs or later. If you keep the temp around 80F they should hatch in 24hrs, but if the water is cooler it may take longer.

If it makes it any better I have never even thought of hatching them and know close to nothing about them.

Hey Sergeant Major how did the Brine shrimp turn out? I fed my Firefish and Clownfish some newly hatched brine shrimp last night and they just loved it and it was very interesting to observe as the Firefish would sit in the current from the powerheads and grab the BS as they passed by. :D
