Title: Breeding Crickets
Description: Anyone know how to?

I have bought some crickets to feed to my new archer fish. However after only having it for around about two days I now can see how quickly I am going to use them all. Does anyone here have any help for me on how to breed crickets.

Yes, crickets NEED sand to breed in. But first you'll want to build a breeding box... this box should be simple and made of wood. Next, staple a band (about 6") of aluminum foil about 12" below the lid and at least 12" from the bottom. This keeps the crickets from climbing the sides of the box. Next, drill a hole in the upper portion and mount a light socket there, use a 40w bulb, this will both light and heat their cage (you will definately want to put it outside as they stink). Now you're ready to set up their environment. Put some loose sand on one side of the box, and put a little dish with water in it (make sure the sides are low enough that the crickets can easily get to the water, a lid to a plastic container works great, but you will have to add water daily). Now stack empty egg crates (the pressed pulp kind, not the styrofoam ones) on the other side, but not higher than the aluminum foil. Now you'll be breeding crickets. You will definately want to gut load them if you're feeding them as a staple to your archerfish, you can buy gut load at many reptile pet stores, just sprinkle a little pile of it into their container, they will feed off of it, and in turn soak up lots of vitamins for your fish to enjoy.

I kinda jumped around a bit there, as I was going by what's in my head, hopefully you were able to follow it. If not, let me know where I lost you, and I'll try to explain better.

I got a bit lost at the start I am afraid. Didn't really follow the how to make the box part.

ok, just basically make a wood box out of plywood. you just need a bottom and 4 walls, and you can use some L-brackets to hold the plywood together. Nothing really fancy is necessary. If I was making one now, I would make one out of 2x4 plywood sheets, 4 of them would be enough. one for the base, one for the front and one for the back, and finally one cut in half for both sides. Oh yeah, and a 5th one for the lid. Some people use acrylic for the lid, but it really doesn't matter.

Oh, since it's probably going to be outside, you'll also want to paint the outside of the box, but only the outside of it, if you paint inside the box, the crickets will eat the paint and then the fish will be injesting all that poison.

Couldn't I just use a big plastic box or something?
