I would definately go eheim but if you are looking for value the filstar is the way to go. They are both excellent filters.

I've got a small Ehiem and it's a real pain (to get started, etc)... I've got a home made trickle filter and I love it. :) I believe the problems I have with the Ehiem is a universal problem, though, throughout all cannisters, especially the smaller ones...

I would never get another external cannister, though. It's put me right off.
