I have seen that before. I think is has been updated since though. I would love to have one of them in my house. You would want to keep the doors tightly fitted to keep the insects out of the rest of the house though.

This looks like it was in a cellar/basement... I wish I had a cellar! Imagine doing water changes, though... I guess if there was a drain down there, it'd be okay...

I imagine that room would get rather humid, too.

Yeah, it would definately require a dehumidifier, and a drain connected directly to the tank for water changes.

Cichlid Commander - April 10, 2006 03:53 AM (GMT)
I guess to have that type of setup I would invest in a automatic water change system.

I think it would be easy to do though, just put a drain at the bottom of the tank, and a faucet at the top... kinda like a bathtub.

That is awesome!! Maybe he can come build me one, lol. Largest betta sorority in the world!!

Stealtherr - April 15, 2006 07:01 AM (GMT)
LOL thats neat and a betta tank like that would be WOW...you do know that you couldn't put teh males together right?

hakkobetta - April 15, 2006 07:22 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't dream of putting the males together, but man could you imagine how many females you could have in there? Like fifty, or more

I actually think that you probably could put two males in a tank that big without worry of fighting. That tank is well over a hundred gallons, I think someone said three hundred? They live naturally in the wild by defending their territory, so if they did run into each other they'd only have a small skirmish and then the other would find a new place to call home on the other side of the tank. It would probably be interested to have a tank like that that simulated the natural rice paddie environment they come from. Make your own ecosystem...only problem is, where would one put it?!

Leema - April 15, 2006 10:44 AM (GMT)
Or, hakko, breed your own bettas, and never seperate the males out. :) They don't get so territorial that way. ^_^ (... Apparently... )

MAZZA_402 - April 15, 2006 01:01 PM (GMT)
Talk about a biotope tank. That's pretty cool. Especially with the insects, the birds, the fish. Nice looking tank, too, to be made out of concrete. Water changes wouldn't be so bad on that one.... Imagine the 50,000 gallon tank the guy built onto the side of his house. He changed out 10,000 gallons a week! And that's only a 20% water change!!! :o

I'll try and find the link. It was really unbelievable. They had to get into a rubber boat to clean the tank. *wishes he had a tank so big he could do that*

It'd take a year to siphon water out with a gravel vac, haha! Obviously some new ways of changing water would have to be implemented... large loans to pay for all of the water... and a BIG insurance policy to protect against floods! Haha!

I've seen that tank Mazza (monster fish keepers forum, I believe).
Thing is, he had the tank so understocked, he turned the filtration off for a year and had no problems. So waterchanges aren't really neccesary... Though I'm sure they're appreciated.

Yeah, Leema. I remember seeing the one in your link some time back when I was looking at DIY articles. Very cool indeed. Nice project.

Forever-Mango - April 16, 2006 04:53 PM (GMT)
I seen this link before. It looks like the same procedure of making a pond...cements...glass...fibreglass. Someone in Australia made exactly the same thing....but like 20 times bigger and made it for koi. Its a very interesting article and one day I will do the same thing but on the ground :D
