Title: CAE Trying to fly?

Eznet2u - April 6, 2006 03:54 PM (GMT)
File this under - What in the world....?

My Albino CAE just hit the glass lid at the top of the tank,
making the lid jump and a loud bang. I turned around and
saw him do it 3 more times in less than two seconds.
He went all the way to the bottom each time and streaked
back up to the top. Very rapid. I thought that he was going
to break the lid. The light is off, nothing moving in room.

What the heck was he thinking?

Is there aspirin for fish?

Maybe your nitrite and ammo is too high. What is your water temperature. Is there any other fish with him? Tell me as much information as you can.

All water parameters are nominal.

Nitrate < 10ppm
Ammo is undetectable.

Water temp is 77.0 - 78.5

All other the other fish were trying to "Wake up".
(all are very slow moving in the mornings, most sitting at bottom.)

(SIDE NOTE: YoYo Loaches will look DEAD, after a night of chasing
down snails. Laying on back or side is not uncommon
and can make your heart jump a little.)

They are always calm and slow to get moving.
(Sound familiar?) :D

Poor thing has red "bruises" around nose and mouth now,
but is acting normal.

Just a clarification...

Water Temp. for those on the other side of the pond
is 25.0 - 25.3 :)

I have heard of chinese algae eaters exhibiting very odd erratic movement/behaviors when they have growth spurts. I have never kept one, though.

How big is he? Do you know his approximate age?

If he is in a growth spurt, you might watch for any signs of agression towards the other fish.

What fish does he live with in what size tank?

That's very interesting.

He's about 8mos to a year old. He is in a 55gal with Zebras, Dwarf neon rainbows,
Swordtails, 1 small pleco, 1 small Red Tail Shark, 1 molly fry and three other CAEs.

The CAEs are all about the same age, and they do become aggressive as the get older
but most of the time only against each other. At the time this happened the others were
not "Awake" yet.

I watched him closely and he spent most of the day hiding in his rock, but tonight he is
back to his normal self, and the red marks are almost gone. :)

Almost forgot, he is about 4 1/2 inches long.

I wonder if the Wright Bros. looked like this after a few attempts? ;)

was the TV on near the tank? Was it playing a superman movie? :D

That's not unusual for a lot of fish to jump like that, but I havn't heard of a CAE doing that, until now.

I found out what he was thinking!!!
