Title: Pond snail in my cycling tank

debisbooked - April 5, 2006 05:00 AM (GMT)
I found a pond snail crawling up the wall of my newly planted (12 days) 75g tank. Should I be concerned that there are more in there? Can they damage my new plants? I put a lettuce leaf in the tank tonight to catch any more, if there are any. I was planning on getting some clown loaches eventually, because I understand they like snails, but I don't want to be overrun with snails while waiting for the tank to fully cycle.

Drs Foster and Smith sell a product called "had a snail" that will wipe out pest snail populations.

I wouldn't put anything in the tank to kill snails. I've heard many stories of the solutions killing fish before snails.

Yeah, there are probably more. I wouldn't worry about 'em, especially if you're planning on getting clowns eventually. :)

i would get a texas, dempsey, oscar and watch them demolish the snail population.

Pond snails in particular are a problem for plants. Ramshorn snails generally leave the plants alone unless they are deteriorating. It takes time and patience, but removing them by hand does work. I do it from time to time in my own tanks and eventually get all the pond snails. If there is one, there is bound to be another....not to mention the fact that they can breed without actually having a mate. Pond snails carry their egg sacs with them, so it's not like they're all over the place like with Ramshorn snails.

Try adding some dwarf puffers in your tank. That helps alot too. And you could remove them later if you decide not to keep them anymore.
