The directions on the ich treatment say "Remove and discard carbon from filter but do not dicountinue filtration." what does that mean?

Carbon will remove the chemicals in the ich treatment. So take any carbon (if you have any) in your filter out, but don't turn the filter off.
If you're treating ich, make sure you up the temperature to about 80-85F.

You can also add a bit of salt to increase the effectiveness... just be careful since some fish don't like salt, like loaches. If you're treating in a guppy tank though, you can go a little overboard on the salt, since they are so tolerant of it. But if you have any fish that arn't salt tolerant, I would just use one tablespoon per 10g to suppliment the ich treatment.

Yeah, salt worked great for my Swordtails last year. Takes a few weeks to get through the lifecycle of the Ich. Raising the temp helps a bit also. Just be sure to make changes like adding salt slowly, if you decide to use it. The first time I tried it, I diluted it in a bucket of treated water and trickled it in through a piece of air line. Later, I just disolved it in a cup of tank water and added it slowly, a little bit at a time.
