r33f, they like foliage to climb on, caves, sand substrate, live fish, (mine likes guppies). They love sinking shrimp pellets. Make sure you do not feed him too much, it will cause him to molt too much and decrease his lifespan. Also, they are a coldwater fish and in a tropical they will survive, just not as long. Cover any holes on the tank lid, they will escape. Keep the water level about 3 inches lower than the top of the tank, with something they can crawl up to get out of the water if they want to. They will get up to 7 inches long and will live up to 5 years if proper care is taken. The water temp should be 65- 75 degrees.
You can have half sand and half pebbles if you would like or just all pebbles. I ended up just switching to all sand. I have a piece of holey drift wood at an angle in the tank for him to climb, and some plants for hiding and crawling. To keep him active, I feed him AND have guppies in there for him to chase.
He should molt the first year between 8- 10 times. Mark this on a calendar to make sure he is on schedule. Every year after that he will molt less.

This is at night, just a night light on top. no money for a real hood yet...

Unless you have a very large tank, and alot of hiding spots. I would not put two or more together. If you do have these two options then make sure when they molt you can seperate them from one another. They will attack at this vulnerable time. Also, when they molt, make sure you do not take out the exoskeleton! And do not feed them for three days. They will eat off of their exoskeleton and that helps them harden their new shell. after three days, take it out and continue feeding as normal, I suggest one pellet per day.
