Title: So here's the plan!
hakkobetta - March 27, 2006 04:41 PM (GMT)
Alrighty, here's the run down of what I'm working on for my future tank projects, which should be having pictures posted.
So far I have:
Two Ten gallon tanks cycling
3 divided 2.5 gallons
one divided 5.5 gallon (getting ready for BIOSPIRA woot!)
Anyways.
So what I want to do is divide one ten gallon into four 2.5 gallon sections for four betta males. The dilema is the fact that I have four zebra danios. Now I only bought them for cycling, but over the month and a half that I've had them...I've become kinda attached to "The Beatles". Soooo, basically, they're not going back to the petstore. :P I'd like to start a ten gallon community tank for my betta females, the danios, and a cory cat/some type of algae eater. Now I know cories are schooling fish, and later I would be getting more.
The other option is to divide the other ten gallon in half and leave the danios and cory on one side, and turn the other side into two more sections for bettas, or leave the danios in their five gallon minibow where they're extremely happy, and just divide the tank four times again for betta tanks.
Now for Christmas, I'm asking for a 29 or 55 gallon kit from Walmart. I'm going to try for the 55 gallon, because that would just be too awesome. Regardless. When I start the 29/55 gallon, I want to do several things. I would be moving the community tank from point A (ten gallon) to Point B (29 or 55 gallon). Then most likely introducing several more corys (if that's what I get) at least two or three more, and some new betta females. The other ten gallon would then revert to betta tanks, once again divided four times. I don't plan on introducing any of my males into a community tank. I know there are circumstances where it has worked before, but I don't want to risk him either 1)Being harassed by the danios 2)Being harassed by the females or 3) Him harassing either of the aforementioned groups
My big question is...could I put a pleco in the community tank, if it is a fifty-five gallon? I know they can get huge (my band director here @ college has a pleco that's got to be ten or eleven inches long), but I want to make sure I have all my I's dotted and T's crossed before I start looking into how I'd be stocking my 29/55 gallon tank.

Plecos can get over 18 inches, if your taking commons...... go for the 55.thats where i buy my tanks, i then customize them.

I think I've decided that corys are my new favorite fish, right after bettas. I bought one today for my five gallon minibow...I'm in love! He is SOOOOOOOOOOO KYOOT! :D :D :D

so are you planning to keep these tanks in your college dorm?
cory cats are also one of my very favorite fish. what kind do you have?
:D
I have spotted, peppered, panda, and elegant cories. They are all super cute and fun to watch!
I used to have some danios that were very nippy, so I think that is the wise choice not keeping them with the betta.
good luck and give us an update! :D

As long as you have a LFS that will take the pleco's back when they get close to a foot, then you should be fine. One good thing about plecos is that they grow slowly, about 1/2 inch per month has been my experience. I currently have 2 plecos, one in each of my 10g tanks. They will go into the amazon themed 150g when I get it going, and that should be right around the time when they are getting too big for the 10g tanks (right now, one is 2.5 inches and the other is 2 inches, and I've had them for about 3-4 months).
Anyway, as long as you can take them back to the pet store when they are too big for the 55, you should be fine for a year and a half at least (in the 55, less in the 29).

If planning to return a fish, be aware that it is easy to become very fond of catfish(or any fish for that matter) catfish are really cute and you don't want to find yourself in a situation where you don't want to give up the fish, but you can't keep it. I know that none of the lfs where I live would take a fish that large. Just check before planning to do this.

My Common Pleco is in a 55g. He is 11" long and is very happy as long as he
has a couple of hiding places.
I got him on the advice of the manager at the LFS.
I had tiger barbs terrorizing my tank, but once he went in everyone started to
behave like good little fishies :)
He has only grown about an inch in 6 months, and I have taken out the magnetic
glass cleaner, as he keeps all of the glass crystal clear.
The others don't seem to pay him much attention until he decides he HAS to
be at the other end of the tank...NOW! then they scatter in all directions.
He is very playful, but only with my daughter...Plays follow the leader with her hand
on the outside of the glass and flares his fins when she walks by the tank.
I walk in and he just watches me...uninterested...
I heard somewhere that they can live like 25 to 30 yrs.
(talk about a long term investment...)
They are great pets as long as you don't mind having to straighten the decor
every two days, as they like to move things around to suit thier mood.
