Title: Native Freshwater Fish Tank

Maybe this is the same as a coldwater tank (maybe TammyD will know for sure?), but has anyone ever thought of a native freshwater fish tank? Might be on the brackish side, maybe not? I have thought about it from time to time, but you usually need a larger tank for such an endeavor, as lake and river fish tend to be larger.

I came across one site today that might make it easier to keep such a tank, as they showcase fish that stay around 3 inches, along with some of the larger fish. They also have crayfish. I really like the various minnows, Flagfish and especially the Darters. Now where can I put another tank... hmmm?

This site has some nice pics and good information about collecting, care, different species, etc., of North American Freshwater fish, and a forum as well. Enjoy.

Well, the reason that most native tanks are big is because most people don't settle for the little fish out there, they always want the big catfish or northern pikes. Some native tanks can actually be quite easy and small. Heck, I have a 10 gallon native tank, if I left it in the dark and only throw in an occasional snack the fish and system wouldn't be affected much other than the little plants dying.

I'm not into the whole pike thing, had a baby muskie and that was it, it kinda of sat here and layed in the big vallisneria thickets and stalked stuff. Pretty cool but would only keep one if I had a huge 300 gallon tank or something. The most widely kept native fish I keep are darters, I have about 50 or more...most are in my ten gallon, a few have been moved around.

Anywho, too much talking lol.

One of the things I have to say is, if anyone wants darters ask me, please don't buy them for like 20 each, I can go to the creek and get 20 in an hour. lol
