Water Hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes)

The seven species of water hyacinths comprise the genus Eichhornia of free-floating perennial aquatic plants native to tropical South America. With broad, thick and glossy ovate leaves, water hyacinths may rise some 1 metre in height. The leaves are 10-20 cm across, supported above the water surface by long, spongy and bulbous stalks. The feathery, freely hanging roots are purplish black. An erect stalk supports a single spike of 8-15 conspicuously attractive flowers, mostly lavender to pinkish in colour with six petals. When not in bloom, water hyacinth may be mistaken for frog's-bit (Limnobium spongia).

One of the fastest growing plants known, water hyacinth reproduces primarily by way of runners or stolons, eventually forming daughter plants. They may also reproduce via seeds. The common water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a vigorous grower known to double its population in two weeks.

Water Hyacinth are used mainly in ponds with Goldfish or Koi. They are usually used for breeding as well as shelter for their eggs and fry. These plants are also used as natural filtration for ponds, most breeders of koi in Australia used these plants as filtration and also a spawning material. Being a noxious plant, most people usually keep them without letting most people know about it.

These guys can be kept indoors if you give it sunlight in the morning, I have mine indoors in my koi fry tank, loves the sun and blooms healthy flowers in the summer, a very nice sight indoors and outdoors. One plant can give you lots of babies if provided with water with high nutrience and sunlight.

What a surprise

Water Hyacinth are used mainly in ponds with Goldfish or Koi.

You are definitely obsessed, then again if I had the room for them I would probably keep them as well.

Well it sure looks like your doing a great job and loving it. It is good to see you are getting what you want out of fish keeping. :)
