MAZZA_402 - March 18, 2006 02:53 AM (GMT)
I'm having a rough time identifying these cichlids. I took some much better pictures and singled them out. If you have any idea, let me know! :D
Cichlid #1

Cichlid #2

Cichlid #3

Cichlid #4

Cichlid #5

Cichlid #6

Cichlid #7

Cichlid #8

Cichlid #9

Cichlid #10

Some of them look to be the same species, so I didn't post twice. I believe that's all of them though!

I like cichlid 3 and 9 best :)

Those two are very nice. The yellow one is especially neat because he will follow you're finger around the aquarium if you put it up next to the glass. Last night I had all 8 of them following it. It was the funniest thing!

Mazza, the Cichlid-forum.com site has a very extensive profile section. It will be very time consuming, but the search engines might help you narrow it down just a bit.

I think the yellow one is a Psuedotropheus sp. (Daktari) but I'm not sure. It looks EXACTLY LIKE IT on the profiles that I have found. I've looked through more cichlid profiles and some look so close it's hard to distinguish.
One has the looks of the livingstonii except it has a blue face, which makes it venustus, but if you look at the tail, it's covered in orange spots, which is more like livingstonii. Do the livingstonii have blue faces too?
It also looks like I have two blue peacocks, but I'm not sure. I've got two cichlid books I'm going to take a look at.
I'm working on setting up a sump right now. So that will allow me to stock even more in my 40 gallon. The 8 in there right now are doing awesome. They are really a blast to watch and are a lot of fun to have. They are getting more used to me every day.

I think the pet shops should know what fish they have. It annoys me when they don't even know the name.

I have a friend at work whose LFS takes in fish from a guy who actually travels around and collects them. Neither the guy nor the LFS knows what he's collected. It's just a "cool fish". The upside is that my friend and I have fun researching what type of fish it could be. :)

The thing is that the pet shops get assorted african cichlids because it looks better in the tank. Thay also get these fish at a young age therefore they look like they get along with each other. The sad thing is when those fish mature and get territorial and the person who bought them start to loosing fish, and start doing some research and find out that the fish weren't compatible, Pople get ticked off man. I've seen people go postal in the petshop which is sad but funny because half the time the people that work in the petshops don't know a damnn thing about fish keeping.

Yeah I know what you mean my friend works at the local pet shop and she has got no clue. She is starting to figure it out though.

Thanks for the help identifying them, guys. As far as the asst. african tanks go, I think it's easier for them and cheaper to just order an odd assortment. Of course, the supplier doesn't tell them. They just ship them a bag of x number of cichlids. It would be better if they had the scientific names though. Sure would be easier on me.
