Title: First salt water tank
TJTommy - March 17, 2006 09:49 PM (GMT)
Im converting my 20 gallon to salt water soon and here is what i have planned out:
Supplies: 20 gallon(24 inches long, 12 inches wide, 16 inches tall), 1 100 watt heater, 1 aquaclear 20 powerhead, 1 coralife 65 skimmer, 1 refractometer, 1 stand, 15 pounds of luve sand, and 20-35 pounds of live rock.
Lighting: Flouresent bulb, the tank will have NO coral or anything that requires special lighting.
Stock: 2 occelaris clowns, 1 clown goby, 3 scarlet cleaner shrimp, ? small crabs and snails.
What do you guys think?

So would this be your first saltwater tank? If so I would recommend you take it slow and do plenty of research.

A single AC20 powerhead for a 20g high is not enough flow imo, as a good rule to use for a FOWLR is around 10-15x turnover, so you want around 250-300gph. Also try and have two powerheads instead of one so the flow will be equally distributed throughout the tank. I heard great things about Coralife protein skimmers, so that is a great choice for a 20 gallon. Refractometers are alot more accurate then Hydrometers. Live rock and sand sound find except imo live sand is a waste of money as the live rock will seed the sand overtime.

Your lighting choice is fine considering your are not going to be keeping any coral. Are you using a single NO fluorescent bulb, or the two NO fluorescent bulb fixture? because it is always nice to have two bulbs as you can have one a 10000K and the other a actinic bulb.

I would stock the tank lightly since it is only a 20g and it has a small footprint compared to a 20g long. I would either house the two Ocellaris Clownfish or a single Ocellaris Clownfish and a Clown Goby. As for a cleanup crew there are many selections to choose from, but I found that Nassarius Snails, Margarita Snails, and Scarlet Reef Hermits do a good job. The way I add my cleanup crew is add only a few to start with and see how it goes and if you need to add more than add more.

I think your plan sounds great. It really shows that you did your research.

Thanks perfect blue, i think im going for an aquaclear 50 powerhead, its only $20.00 more than the aquaclear 20.

I would put one clown in and maybe two other smaller fish. Clown pairs, etc. really need around 30 gallons.
If you have the money I would go with the power compact satellite instead. Your going to be wanting one in the future and it's only about 50 bucks...good to have just in case you get interested in polyps.
Having NO flourescents though doesn't totally limit what corals you can get though. Some stuff like mushroom corals actually thrive under lower lighting. They get too much lighting and they die off.
Other than that you plan sounds pretty good overall. Like perfectblue said, take this slowly. Just because you have all the equipment and the specs planned out doesn't mean your necessarily going to be successful.

So what 2 small fish do you suggest?
r33f-boy - April 1, 2006 02:23 AM (GMT)
Maybe damselfish or a firefish goby and even neon goby :D
TJTommy - April 1, 2006 07:40 PM (GMT)
