Title: Species suggestions?
Description: For a maybe tank...

There's a tank I'm thinking of getting... Not sure on it's exact volume, but it's at least 100 gallons. I don't want to muck around with plants, and would like to try some of the meaner cichlids... I've never really had much interest, so don't know where to start. So pretty much I'm asking - what cichlids do you like and what cichlids do you reckon would be good for a beginner cichlid keeper? pretty much anything Central and South America. Jags, chocolates, red devil, rainbows, Texas, salvinii, Cuban, 5 spots, oscars, black belts, red terror, Midas. These cichlid are usually kept with their own kind, preferably with a mate. ALL ALONE. if you try to put anything in the tank after they are stablished will not survive .

My LFS has an awesome cichlid tank with many species. What species are possible to mix?

You could try get a pair of red devils that would be great in that tank and they are pretty mean. At the pet shop I put my finger on the glass and it tried to bite it.

get a breeding pair of Neolamphagus Brichardi (sp?). one they mate, the generations will help the next and next survive, so you have a colony set up.

Are you thinking a long the lines of SA/CA cichlids? If so it really depends on whether you want 1 big fish (or a pair) or if you would prefer a community of fish (mixed species tank). If you want several fish I would say go for those that are typically toward the bottom end of the New World aggression scale (Acara, Firemouth, Rainbow, Salvini, Severum, possibly Oscar etc..). If your after more of a big bruiser of a fish all the one's CC posted are great but like he said be aware that you can often not mix any other fish with them (sometimes even a breeding partner can be tricky).
