Title: Need Help Identifying New Cichlid!
Description: Plus - Do you think this will work?

Hey guys. Got a new cichlid a few days ago and I was wondering what species he was..

I'm going to go pick up about 6 more cichlids for my 40 gallon tank tomorrow. I'm going to turn it into a strictly cichlid tank.

Will mixing them work?

Also, could I get away with 6-8 convicts? Could I just move a 'pair' to my 10 gallon tank to breed them? I'm not worried about the water quality, just agression. I know that by overstocking the tank, I can actually keep it down. That's what I'm trying to do with the 6 cichlids I'm getting tomorrow, or if I hear back from you guys within the next 12 hours, the 8 convicts or so.

Thanks!

Could it be a hybrid?

Neat little guy!

In a way it does. Mine hasn't gotten the red face yet. Mines just a blueish tint with dark black vertical stripes and HUGE eyes. He may be a hybrid. I'm not really sure.

Not in 40gals man. The overstocking rule your thinking of mainly only applies to mbuna and some species of tang. New World cich's are a different story due to the way they claim territory. In any case 8 cons alone without the africans would be heavy stocking going by most peoples standards.

Also allthough I'm sure people will post to the contrary to go against the norm, I have to say the common advice that it is really not a good idea to mix old and new world cichlids together is fairly sound. They differ so greatly in social order, general behaviour/aggression, courting/spawning ritual, diet and water requirements they really are from different "worlds" as the terms suggest and just don't typically mix well.

Totally agree. Btw I think I posted the same thing in another topic. You can't mix them. ;)

Didn't really want to mix them, just pondering on whether to go with the convicts, or the africans. I ended up going for the mixed african tank. It's really lively and doing great. The fish are eating well and are very peaceful with each other.[SIZE=1]
