Title: Betta and Bio-Wheel

CatLover - March 15, 2006 02:59 AM (GMT)
Not sick or injured (but almost) I just moved my betta into my 10 gallon tank (its cycled, but he just moved in and is the only fish in there)

I thought this would be a no-brainer for him, but he won't stay away from the bio-wheel.

He gets next to it and starts floating off and then freaks out and gets dangerously close to the intake tube (he's a veil-tale)

I thought that with 10 gallons, he would find somewhere else to be- like in his specially purchased silk plants.

Anyway, I turned off my bio-wheel for now, but obviously I can't leave it off all night because the bacteria would die. I know I could float the wheel and remove the inside stuff, and just leave it in the tank, but I'd hate to do that.

Any suggestions? I recently purchased him and he has some fins that are kinda damaged, and I don't want any of his fins to get sucked up. Its a bio-wheel mini, but its still pretty powerful.

Thanks guys! please help.

You might try putting a prefilter on the intake tube, or even a piece of nylon stocking on it.

Okay, I put a piece of stocking over the intake and secured it with a small rubber band. The rubber isn't going to leach any chemicals out and hurt him will it?

I think the stocking may have slowed down the filter drawing water in, but it started up and hopefully there won't be a problem.

Thanks!

I have never had a problem with the use of rubber bands in my tanks. If you think about it they sell some plants with rubber bands around the stems in the stores. I would not think it should be a concern. Just make sure it's changed every so often, they do break.

Just dont use those that have a bitter taste. Even humans don't like it, why would fish like it :P
