Title: Peacock eel...
Description: Must have peacock eel...

So, I've wanted one for a very long time, and am kicking myself because I didn't grab one when I had the chance... Anywho, it's a 30 gallon tank, 1 angel, 2 penguin tetras, 2 laser cories, and 2 white clouds. I plan on getting a piece of pvc with the elbow and branch and what-not. The problem is that I don't know about my substrate. It's large gravel, and I'm worried it won't work because of the gravel. The pieces are probably about 1/4 inch on average, which is pretty big. So... if anybody's ever kept them, please let me know what i'm up against.
Thanks,
-Stu

Do peacock eels get really big? I'm not sure.
Good Luck Stewie! :D

Bout a foot. 30 gallons is probably too small, but I'll move him out when it gets too big. Called the LFS. I'm on the waiting list. They said quote "We are not expecting a shipment" unquote.

Could you buy one online?

You could also ask them to order it for you and then wait for it to arrive. I have done that before.

I have a peacock eel that I've had for about 6 months or so. He's about 5" right now. They get up to 16". When I first got him, he lived in a tank with your regular 'petsmart $5 gravel' and then I changed the tank to a more natural look and used river rock landscaping stone. These stones we're huge but he still managed to burrow when he got the chance. As soon as they get used to the tank and you walking through the room and feeding time, you'll find they don't burrow at all. Mine hangs out under the sponge filter and in the rocks. Ocassionally I would find him UNDER the piece of PVC. I'm guessing he dug under it and made a smaller 'cave' under it. LoL! They are crafty little things. Mine has been in tanks with river rock, sand, regular gravel and eco complete. I haven't noticed him act any different in any of them.
One thing you might notice is that if you ever really rearrange the tank or change the substrate, he's going to stay buried for a few days.
If you're lucky, you can find one that eats something other than worms. Some eat shrimp pellets. Mine only eats blood worms. I'm sure he wouldn't mind an earthworm or tubifex, but I've never tried. I just buy bloodworms every month to feed him. Great fish if you ever get the chance to have one. He's definitely one of the top fish on my list.
As far as tank sizes go... mines currently in a 29 gallon with two blood parrots and two dojo loaches, lol! He has a blast. When they get bigger, I'm going to move them into a 55 gallon. Right now though they are doing great in the 29. I wouldn't worry about the 30. Think about it, it's longer than the 29, so he has more room to swim around, right?
I think you'll be perfectly fine with the setup that you have. Good luck and be sure to send some pictures!
