Title: Danios came home...

hakkobetta - March 14, 2006 06:51 AM (GMT)
Hey all, I had a post a while back asking about what to do for bringing my fish home for Spring Break. I ended up just bringing the bettas' tanks home with me, because I didn't get my other ten gallon in time (it's a gift from a friend) to do the dividers. -_- Soooo as I'm getting ready to go buy an automatic feeder, I find out that NO pets are allowed to stay in the dorms over Spring Break...

Murrrr.....

So I had to go out and buy another cheapo tank for the four danios....

I bought an x-large critter keeper (approx. 2.75 gallons) and set up a UGF in it for temporary. Every other day I'm taking a quarter of the water out and putting new in to make sure there isn't a buildup of ammonia. I didn't have any extra tank decor for them, so I found some old plastic toys to put in the bottom. They seem to still be very bored though. Their other tank is a five gallon minibow with three fun plants and a little hidey hole in the corner that they swim through all the time. Now they have a sea turtle, a plastic bandaid, and a betta holding cup that has been sunk in the gravel. I'm trying not to feed them as much to keep down on ammonia levels as well.

*sigh*

I can't wait to get them back to school so I can put them back in the tank where they're happiest. Also, when I leave, I'm going to leave the tank cycling, along with my ten gallon *squee*, so I'll have two cycled tanks by the next time I come home, which'll be sometime in late April.

Woot.

Any suggestions on how to keep the danios happier? I'm probably going to buy them a cheap hidey hole tommorow @ Walmart, along with some silk plants so they'll have more fun chasing eachother around. Also, should I be changing the water more often? I'm trying to do it as soon as ammonia shows up.

Thanks! - Kristen

Everytime ammonia shows up is a pretty good way to go about it. Sounds like you have found a way to keep the fish even if they aren't as happy right now as usual.

You have spring break until April? cool!
Just try to be really diligent tetsting their water. I would keep some jugs of water ready, to where you can just dip some water out and then have some more to pour right in. Danios are hardy, but also very active (as I'm sure you know)

Just be careful, and I'm sure they will be fine. :D

LOL! I wish I had spring break until April, Catlover! I'm going back on Saturday night, but the next time I'll be coming home is late April :D I'm leaving the ten gallon (I might actually be using live plants for it :o ) and the 2.75 cycling until I come home, hopefully they'll have sorted themselves out by then. That of course means I need to get a new whisper filter for the 2.75, I don't like UGF's for betta tanks.

Yeah, I'm getting ready to change tank water right now. They always seem to get inside the daggum water container that I'm trying to get dirty water out of!!

Little aggravations...:D

But I still  wub them.

 Thats just like the fish law that causes fish that you aren't trying to catch swimming into the net!

They're actually not too bad right now, checked the water before the change, they're only at 1.0 ammonia level, maybe the UGF is working after all....:D
