Title: Most commonly kept Cichlids...

againstallodds - March 13, 2006 04:34 PM (GMT)
It is my opinion that the most commonly kept cichlids by novice to intermediate hobbyists are...

Oscar
Convict
Firemouth
Jewel
Red Devil
Jack dempsey
Angelfish

I will be posting "how to's" on these guys and pinning them here. If you feel other Cichlids should be added please post them but remember this list is for novice to intermediate keepers.

I have to agree with the list you posted. In my area though I've noticed that my LFS is pumping out Oscars, Flowerhorns and jaguars. The sad thing is that they are not informing the buyer about what type of tank or equipment to buy and these people are coming home with a pair of jags, a 10g tank and a sponge filter.

I think Blue and Bolivian Rams would reach the list, too. :)

Jags and FH's are definately gaining popularity with novices now that the chain stores are getting them. It's unfortunate but most of these fish which should easily live over 10 years will probably never see their 1st birthday. :(

And Kribensis, Brichardi, Yellow Labs, Kenyi...

I saw about 20-30 flowerhorns in an aquarium at Cabella's- its an outdoor-world type store. The tank they were in was probably about 700 + gallons. They were georgeous and it is a shame that someone would put them in a small aquarium. :(

If anyone lives near a Cabella's it would be a great place to visit (whether you are in need of fishing gear and boating equipment or not) as they have lots of freshwater aquariums and indoor ponds. Very cool. Fortunately, they don't sell their beautiful fish!

Sorry, I don't know a lot about cichlids, but I just thought I'd throw in that Cabella's has great displays- (they are a chain store- popping up everywhere)

How about gren terrors?

Cichlid Commander - March 14, 2006 01:44 AM (GMT)
green terrors are cool, a bit expensive around here at about $24.00 for a 2'' fish. At that price it would scare any buyer.

A true Aequidens rivulatus (the real Green Terror) would cost $100 to $200. The fish we see as GT's these days are Gold Saums and White Saums. They are not true GT's. The real deal has not been seen in the hobby for years. The "saums" are a closely related but less aggressive species...Heres a pic of my breeders. This freakin' pic is EVERYWHERE! I posted it 4 years ago at Badmans with no watermark. My loss.

Tight picture.

It seems like the gt over there cost so much. Ones around 2 inches in petsmart only cost 5 dollars around my place. Even though GT are pretty, I'm still more into Small and Cute cichlid. :D

There is still true green terror in the hobby man. They are still collected from Peru and there's some F1/F2's around aswell as the wildcaught's. They're not common and do cost way more but are obtainable.

Could possibly add texas to the list aswell.
