Title: Strange Animal in Pond

Leema - March 11, 2006 01:44 AM (GMT)
So I did a waterchange in my pond today, and I sucked up this thing from the gravel. Any idea what it is? It's very cool. It moves like a rotifer... The only place for it to of come from is the pond plants I got from the nursery.

Dunno what that is. I found a chipmunk once in my pond.

Looks like a Phylum Nematoda (Roundworm). Google it as an image. You will see all kinds of pics. Just the Google web search will turn up some articles for you. I found it by first doing a search on pond worm. :)

Here is one of the links:

A chipmunk? Taking a dip I guess.

Looks like a leech or some type of worm.

It was about an inch long when it fully stretched out, but when 'relaxed' it would sit at about 1cm long. I've put it back in the pond now.
I offered myself to it (considering leach) and it didn't bite, so I'm guessing not.

I'm pretty sure this is what it is!

EDIT: Hmmm... But looking at this:

This creature would exist in this state inside my gut, not in my pond... Correct?

So I'm guess I'm going to have to keep seraching... Creepy!

Lol so much for that...then again maybe your pond is more like your gut then you first though. pH 1.5?

Leema, I would have to say you are correct. When we consume the fish skin or undercooked fish and then it goes through our system.
That is what I got out of it.

jdizine - Not sure what you're saying...

I'm correct that it wouldn't be in my pond?
Or I'm correct in my species suggestion?

Yes it could be in your pond, this is maybe an easier illustration to understand.

Oh, I see...

I did some research...
QUOTE
Australia is free of the human schistosomes, our native fauna have their own species. In standing bodies of freshwater such as ponds or dams the waterfowl that live around the area may harbour their own species of schistosome.

So it's not this species (Chinese).

But it could still be something unpleasant for my fish. I put it back, unfortunately... Before anyone had responded on the other forum identifying it as a platyhelminthy (on another forum).

:(

Thanks for the additional diagram, though, jdizine!

After catching up on this thread, I think I'm glad I am a vegetarian.
