Title: Feeding Catfish

CatLover - March 9, 2006 02:27 AM (GMT)
I am just wondering what you guys feed your cory catfish and how much of it?

Been wondering that not because I don't feed them or they're sick or dieing or anything. They're perfectly fine- but, there's always room for improvement in fishkeeping.

It is always so vague on sinking fish foods- feed what your fish can eat within 2 hours, etc. Well, in 2 hours my cories could put away a LOT of food. They don't waste any time- they find the food quick. Then it says-remove uneaten food- well, if I fed until they quit eating, I would probably be feeding half a bag of food to them every day. Then again it says- "remember that your fish's stomach is the size of its eyeball" Huh????

I like to feed them a variety. I usually feed them the hikari wafer things that have the picture of the cory on the package and then the "tropical tablets for bottom feeders" made by tetra. occasionaly a few small algae thins- (I know that they aren't algae eaters, but they sure do enjoy them) and of course, they eat any flakes that the tetra drop- they drop a lot of flakes- tetra just really aren't the brightest bulbs in the box ;) (after all, they are "scavengers")

Specifics
3 panda (1.3" each)
2 spotted (2 " each)
1 peppered (1.5") this one was given to me a while back- his fins are deformed-but he 's always seemed really active and happy- he enjoys the other peppered I found for him who was very small when I got him ...
Another peppered who is huge for a cory- (3+" and growing)

Mine just really aren't nocturnal either

I've had them a long time and they do fine- I was just thinking about it.

Any feedback or experiences would be appreciated! :D Sorry, I got a little lenghty :D

They'll eat anything for me. They seem to like the shrimp pellets (Wardley, corydoras on the front) and will sample the algae wafers... But they seem to like just plain old flake food the most.

My plecos loaf all day and getr active at night and since I feed my fish at night I let them have leftovers, but every once in a while I throw in a couple of algae waffers.

Like how many pellets for 7 cories?

Thanks! :D

Suggestions ?

Probably 5. ;) But maybe 7 small ones... I try to give them enough so they don't have to fight over them.

I don't believe the fish's stomach is as big as its eye. My oscars eat medium size pellets which are about the size of there eyes and they eat at least 6 each every feed.

Yeah, I don't hold much stock in the stomach the size of the eye thing, either.

Thanks Leema, I usually break tablets/pelets to where there are 7 small pieces and then a few extra small pieces so that the bigger ones can eat 2. Once a day. Do you think that this is okay? I just know that for a while I overfed them and they just layed around and didn't even look for any leftovers. Now, they are fairly active.

Thanks! :D

I feed my fish about 1-3 times a week. :P They're constantly looking for food, plus they're in planted tanks. Sounds like you're going alright, CatLover.

Thanks for the advice! :D
