Online Stores? if so there are a bunch.

http://www.marinedepot.com/homepage.asp?CartId=

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/NavR...=3532&subref=AY

http://www.aquabuys.com/page/aqb/CTGY/d1

http://www.hellolights.com/

http://www.hamiltontechnology.com/

Have a look around those sites and see if you find any you like. What size tank are you thinking of getting?

Since my brother didnt need his 29 any more, I was just wondering if i should make it into a saltwater tank. And the idea said GO FOR IT! So i guess i'm going to turn the 29 into a marince as soon as i find the lighting for corals and anemone and other things.

try aquatraders.com. Its the alternative in lighting systems. they are much cheaper than anything i've seen in the web.

Yes very cheap and I even have bought a light system from them, but I hear many negative comments about their products including the ballasts catching on fire, bulbs shorting out right when you turn on the fixture, and other things. It is really a gamble with Aquatraders some people have used their light systems without a problem and some have had problems.

Let me tell you that I have always bought their products and I could account for 6 lighting fixtures and never had a problem yet. I guess the only thing for me is that since they ship from California it takes a couple of days longer to get to me. I've seen their stuff on some of your tanks how have they turned out.

Yes I bought a 12" 18w PC light fixture from them and the fixture has worked great. I don't have any complaints about their products, but from what I've heard some of there light fixtures can be faulty. :)

I have purchased two lighting sys. from them. The power compact worked just fine. I just installed the Metal Halide sys. And so far so good.

I guess if you do get a faulty one you can always say you get what you pay for :D

Does this have the right specturn or how everu spell it :P Is this light bulb good enough?

http://cgi.ebay.com/250-W-Watt-10000K-Meta...1QQcmdZViewItem
That one is 250 watt.

http://cgi.ebay.com/175-W-Watt-20000K-Meta...1QQcmdZViewItem
This is one 175.

Would these be good for reef lighting?

Perfectblue - March 11, 2006 08:11 PM (GMT)
10K, 14K, or 20K would be great for a saltwater tank. I personally like to use 10K bulbs.

r33f-boy - March 12, 2006 12:01 AM (GMT)
Ok thanks. So if it's a 10 or 20k then its good enough for live rocks and anemone?

Yes 10 or 20K is fine for live rock and a Anemone, but remember to research the requirments of Anemones before purchasing.

Ok thanks. I'll do lots and lots of research then.

And also on curioursoty, since people say about the specturn and that. Is the k another meaning for the specturn or are they different things?

I'm not an expert on lighting but I'll try to explain the best I can. Kelvin(K) is a unit a measure to measure the spectrum or temperature of light. Kelvin describes the color of light. Lower K rating will lean more towards the red side of the spectrum, but higher the K rating it leans more toward the blue end of the spectrum, and has a higher color temperature. Different organisms need the correct spectrum and intensity of light in order to survive. Freshwater live plants need natural daylight so around 5500K-10000K is best, and a saltwater reef tank needs a more blue light so around 10000K-20000K works best. Does this make sense? :)

Thanks for the explantion. Now I get it. Thanks alot.!!

The thing that kills me is none of them tell you off the bat what the lumens are, which matters a lot. They'll tell you the k values, and sometimes even the CRI, and the wattage, as if wattage matters. I'd personally rather have a low wattage, higher lumen output light than a high wattage lower lumen output light, because it's costing me more to run the high wattage bulb, and the tank wouldn't be benefiting as much from it. You always have to contact the manufacturer to find out the lumens of a particular bulb. One of these days I should put together a post with different common bulbs and list their size, CRI, K, Lumens, and Wattage as a reference guide... maybe that's something for next year. I'll make a note to myself to do that. In fact, I like that idea more and more, there simply isn't anything else out there like that, so we should have it here.
