Title: Breeding the Blue Acara
Description: An article, not a question

Octoberfest - March 4, 2006 03:40 PM (GMT)
GENERAL INFO:

Adult Size: 8 inches

Minimum tank size: 40 gallon

Breeding size: 2-3 inches

Brood size:
1st spawn, around 100
Tops out at about 300

BREEDING:

Findind a pair:

Blue Acaras are actualy fairly hard to sex. The females will have the shorter dorsal, and usuay be more serene-not much though

Conditioning the Pair:

Put the the pair in at least a 29 gallon for breeding. Bllodworms, pellets, Brine shrimp, all help get them ready.

The Tank and Babies

The tank should have a bed of sand for a substrate (i've had sucess with a large bed of gravel, however). Relatively dimmed lighting and some floating plants wi make them happy. i wouldnt recomend planting any as they wil try and or will tear it up.provide a large cave for spawning. the eggs will hatch in 3-5 days, the fry becoming free-swiming a coupe days after. Feed them with BBS and Liquid fry food.

Comments: These guys are excellent parents. Unlike convicts, the mae never becomes inpatient to breed again and whales on the femae. i've heard reports of Pairs having a brood already and spawning agin, whie protecting the older brood. Also, Blue acaras have been known to still protect their young when the babies approach 1 inch! These guys are Beautifull!

The pic doesnt do her justice :)
