Title: My Freshwater 29 Gallon Journal
Description: Notes / Pictures
MAZZA_402 - January 17, 2006 01:43 PM (GMT)
I thought I might start a journal on my 29 gallon. Especially since I am doing so many changes to it.
Tank Size: 29 Gallons
Substrate: Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium
Filter: Marineland Penguin 200 With Biowheel
Lighting: Standard
Fish: 3.5" Purple Blood Parrot, 4" Dojo Loach, 4" Peacock Eel, 2" Female Betta, 3 2" Celebes Rainbows.
Plants: Large bunch of Anachris, 6 Amazon Swords, 2 Wysteria.
Other Decorations: 1 Large Piece of Rainbow Rock, 2 Smaller Pieces of Rainbow Rock, 1 3:1 PVC Pipe (For a cave)
1/13/2006 -
Removed two clown loaches and 1 celebes rainbow.
1/16/2006 -
Removed sand substrate. Added Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium substrate. Positioned rocks to form large rock cave in corner of aquarium.
Personal Note: Black looks so much better than sand! The fish REALLY show up much better and the plants look much healthier. 20lbs provided enough of a 'bed' to adequately plant my amazon swords and wysteria. I'd like to purchase another 20lb bag when I get my CO2 equipment and upgraded lighting in February.

Finally some pictures of the tank! I hope you guys enjoy. I spent the better half of my morning re-designing the tank. This tank gets re-decorated about once a week, LOL.
Here's a few pictures of it's current state for your enjoyment.

Here's a picture of my two blood parrots as well as my peacock eel. The eel is a little camera shy.

Here's a pic of the blood parrots hanging out by their new rock cave.

Here's a full view picture of my 29 gallon.
Sergeant Major - January 22, 2006 03:49 AM (GMT)
Very nice, you should add that last pic to the photo contest too.
MAZZA_402 - January 22, 2006 01:00 PM (GMT)
I thought we could only enter one picture per member to the photo contest?
Sergeant Major - January 22, 2006 03:16 PM (GMT)
No, you can enter as many as you want, and the pictures that don't win can be entered in next month's contest, too.

A few updates to my journal. I finally got some good pictures of my blood parrots, and I'll upload my pictures of my peacock eel as soon as I can.

Those two are the main attractions in my tank. The other fish I have in there are my peacock eel and dojo loach. I recently got some awesome shots of my eel, so I will post them soon.

Here's one of my favorite pictures of my peacock eel.

Here's a side view of him, however, it's not the best though. I wish I could have gotten more of his tail. He's got 6 circles that go down his tail. He's got some really beautiful markings.

Here's one of the few pictures I have of my dojo loach. He's peeking out from behind some of the plants in his tank.

hey those fish are beautiful. My favorite is the eel. Keep the pics coming. You have a good tank setup. Very nice. :D

I just noticed that you have the same filter that I have on my 29 gallon.
MAZZA_402 - March 13, 2006 03:13 AM (GMT)
It's certainly not a bad filter. It's a little noisy, but it's nothing that I haven't been able to handle. After all, it sits right next to my bed. One thing I have noticed is that it doesn't like sand too well, or if the water level is too high it makes a grinding / gurgling noise. So it's either splashing or grinding, take your pick. I love the extra media compartment though, and I never have any trouble with my water parameters.
I recently moved some fish around to make my parrots more active. They we're both hiding in the rocks and refused to move except at feeding time. Made for a very boring tank.
The new lineup -
29 Gallon -
3.5" Purple Blood Parrot
3.5" Dojo Loach
5" Dojo Loach
3 1" Zebra Danios
1" Rummynose Tetra
2" Fancy Goldfish
2" Female Betta
40 Gallon Breeder -
3" Blood Parrot
2.25" Senegal Bichir
3 1.5" Bleeding Heart Tetras
2" Rainbow Shark
2" Celebes Rainbow
It really livens up the tanks quite a bit. The 29 is much more active due to the dither fish. I may try adding some more fish to the 40 gallon as soon as I can find something that will work. Haha!

I love that peacock eel, how big do they get?
MAZZA_402 - March 13, 2006 03:23 PM (GMT)
Supposedly up to 16", but I have yet to see it. I've had him since September of 2005, and to tell you the truth, I can't tell if he's grown a bit. They are great fish to have. He's certainly a clown. Mine's living in 8.3 water right now. He's happy and healthy as ever. Only eats bloodworms though, so he's a bit costly to feed, but worth every penny in my opinion.
CatLover - March 13, 2006 05:14 PM (GMT)
Do you know how long the eel is supposed to live?
MAZZA_402 - March 13, 2006 06:01 PM (GMT)
On average about 5-10 years. Sometimes longer. Just depends on the care and nutrition they recieve. All in all, a great addition to any aquarium. My eel is one of my favorite fish.
bartier - March 13, 2006 10:06 PM (GMT)
Sounds like an awesome fish to me. Good luck with him at 16".

I have been wanting to get a peacock eel for ever, but never had the tankage. You have yours in a 29 though... I want one. I was going to get one a while back and thought "oh, better do more research, first" and thanks to my stupidity I haven't seen one since. As soon as I find one he's coming home with me.
CatLover - March 13, 2006 10:39 PM (GMT)
Well, he should still have plenty of time to grow! He's beautiful.
jdizine - March 16, 2006 09:31 AM (GMT)
I want to get the weather loach but more than just one! I used to have them! They are the friendliest fish I have ever owned. Wish he wouldn't hide on you so much! How long is he? He looks to be 6", if not more.
FishyFry - March 18, 2006 01:48 PM (GMT)
Nice collection in that tank! I love 'em all!
MAZZA_402 - March 18, 2006 07:08 PM (GMT)
The peacock eel used to be in a 10 gallon with the dojo loach for the longest time. The 29 gallon gives him plenty of swimming room. You'll find they are only active every now and then. Normally he hides out under the PVC pipe or under the rocks. I can still see him doing that at 16". He usually gets fiesty during feeding time, darting all over the aquarium. I just got the second dojo loach and for the first time I'm starting to see what some call 'loach pileing'. The loaches, whatever the species, tend to have a fun time laying on top of each other. Strangely I saw my dojo loach and bichir laying on top of each other. I guess the dojo didn't know one way or the other or the bichir could just care less.
When the blood parrots start outgrowing their tank, we are going to buy them a 55 to 75/90 gallon tank for them.
If you ever have the opportunity to get a peacock eel, they are a blast. I love mine! I might even get a few more. There is a pet store in my area that sells tankfulls of them. They claim they eat shrimp pellets, but I never could get them to eat them. Mines hooked on bloodworms. I had feed him every other day.

The bigger one is about 5" or so, as far as I can tell. I look at the ruler and look at them, and thats what I come up with. The smaller one seems to be much smaller, but just a bit shorter in length. I joke with my wife that the 5" one is the swimming cigar. :o lol.n He's really 'thick' for lack of better words. He's got a lot of girth on him compared to the other one.
