Title: Back and Forth Tanks
Description: changing all the time

jdizine - March 3, 2006 10:43 AM (GMT)
 I started out with wanting to breed guppies, mission accomplished. I then put all the fry into a seperate tank, fed my two adult male guppies to a goldfish tank, and "Rocky" our blue cray. My teenage male guppies I seperated also.
:o I then made an all snail tank.
 My teen males are getting so pretty, so I put them back into the snail tank. I only have 4 males in there for now.
:?: BUT! I am uncertain about one of them. If this guppy one is a male he will be black and white (maybe black delta). But if it is female, I have a beautiful one on my hands.
B) I am going to try to get pics soon. Maybe then, I'll be able to tell. You would think at this age I would be able to, but I am still uncertain...............'J'bird
okay, not the best shots though...

:o Thx Fly, but not good pics. i just don't know if he is a she or she is a he. It has the colors of a male but the shape of female. The gravid spot or gonopodium is uncertain. :?:

Leema - March 4, 2006 07:05 AM (GMT)
It looks like a girl turning into a boy from those shots at least.
I had a girl that colour, though. :D So here's to hoping!

jdizine - March 5, 2006 02:14 AM (GMT)
Thx! That is the prettiest girl or good lookin' male. If it is female, she will be bred with my top male. Not to sell, just to prove to myself I can get a perfect strain. Before the 2 year period they all say it takes. I got my fingers crossed.

She's a female. I've bred guppies almost continuously since I was about 6, so that's about 22 years... I used to do it as pets, but just in the last year I switched to doing it as feeders. Anyway, I've had a few very colorful females. One was so colorful, she put most fancy show guppies to shame. But she wouldn't give birth for nothing... except once, the day before she died. We called her "Big Momma" because she got so pregnant you could actually see the fry wiggling inside her. All the fry she did give birth to eventually, were horribly deformed... though strangely, they were the only fish the pet stores have actually wanted to buy from me.

Anyway, not to ramble, I wish you better luck than I had with breeding her.

bartier - March 5, 2006 04:46 AM (GMT)
that story is really weird you could see the fry inside her :|

jdizine - March 5, 2006 06:30 AM (GMT)
and YOU bartier,,,,,, where are the fry? take a closer look and tell me!

I would think that change in temp. would be the problem of her not having fresh birth or living birth (your guppy). You would know though, it is definately not preg. with fry!

bartier - March 5, 2006 07:04 AM (GMT)
what?

CatLover - March 5, 2006 06:59 PM (GMT)
I have a strange case on my hands right now, I have a guppy fry that I was absolutely possitive was a female at about .8 inches. Now, this guppy is a male. It was in a tank with all females until recently. I have actually read of female fry "changing gender" when in an all female tank. Of course, the guppies that "change gender" are sterile. Has anyone else heard of this? I can see now that this guppy is the exact coloration of its father, and the female fry I have is the coloration of the mother.

Is your tank all females?

Leema - March 5, 2006 10:10 PM (GMT)
As I understand, all livebearers are born female and then some change to male, depending on how many males already exist in their environment.

CatLover - March 5, 2006 10:14 PM (GMT)
That's cool Leema! I didn't know that. So, are the changers sterile like I read or no?

jdizine - March 6, 2006 01:07 AM (GMT)
Lemma, the guppy, (he/she) was raised with male and female guppies, along with other newborn fry. I only transferred the teen guppies, and an equal number of the sexes. I don't know from here though, today she/he is still a mystery fish?
If it is a SHE, she is not being chased by the other males.

bartier - March 6, 2006 05:17 AM (GMT)
Sounds like something you might just have to wait and see as to how it turns out. Looks as though you have some nice fish on your hands though.

I don't believe that they're sterile, or else they'd all be female or sterile. :P However, I think the later in life they 'turn' the more likely it is that there will be problems. I once had a gupppy that looked female except for its gonopodium. He never chased any of the girls, and was never chased himself... So who knows?

I think you're just going to have to wait and see. :) However, the guppy you picture looks kind of fat - like a girl. So maybe. ^_^

jdizine - March 8, 2006 08:59 AM (GMT)
She has lost a bit of weight since those pics. Still not sure though. I think you guys are right, I will just have to wait and see.

CatLover - March 11, 2006 12:59 AM (GMT)
I bought a female about like that at one point, she became known as the "IT FISH" She first started getting color on her body, then she began slimming, her gravid spot disappeard and then developed a gonopodium. Was a very pretty fish- never showed any social behaviors either way. The "IT FISH" didn't live more than like a year. I always wished that I had taken pictures throughout the process. When I bought her she was totally female shaped and even complete with a large (but not pregnant) gravid spot. She was the same size as 2 other females I bought at the same time and they were totally normal and had fry. I bought them out of an all female tank (or it was at the moment I bought her)

Very strange! It might be cool to take some pictures as she changes if she changes.

Leema - March 11, 2006 02:03 AM (GMT)
I will try to find the pictures of my IT FISH... Who I called Hermie. ;) There might be some on my other computer. Then you can let me know if your it fish looked the same, CatLover. :)

I would give it a name like Sam that can be boy or girl :)

jdizine - March 15, 2006 10:20 AM (GMT)
Well, here are the latest pics of my male female guppy. I think it is going to be male. The one on top in both pics was the one in question.

jdizine - March 15, 2006 11:10 AM (GMT)
:o Oh! Wow! It looks like it is getting a little red on the tail fin. LOL! That is funny that you call it your IT fish! I am laughing MAO!

bartier - March 15, 2006 11:42 AM (GMT)
Those guppies are amazing. Can't wait to see how they turn out. :)

CatLover - March 16, 2006 02:38 AM (GMT)
It looks like it has slimmed down some.

My It FISH's tail was shaped sorta like that.

I already kinda miss my largest male guppy. I took them all to the lfs on Saturday. :(

They multiplied like rabbits! ...only worse

jdizine - March 16, 2006 09:23 AM (GMT)
Well, I got a side shot this morning. "IT"#3, lol! Is the top fish in this shot. Don't worry about the tail fin, it is just the pic, it actually looks like it is gray or almost clear still.

Oh yeah! That last shot is a nice one!

jdizine - March 21, 2006 07:28 AM (GMT)
Well, my "IT" fish is now really getting alot more color. I think it is a "HE" though. His gonopodium is showing up and is on the Rather large side. Odd? He seems to be growing alot faster than the other males in my tank. He is starting to show signs of green on his sides. His dorsal fin, is showing a bit of color too, and it also is on the large side compared to my other males.

All pics are, my "IT" fish I have named bobby. The other male guppy, (right pics), is always with bobby! He is actually my very first fry! His name is albert. Either they are the best of buddies or gay.LOL!!
If you notice in the first pics I posted Albert is in those shots too! He is my favorite I guess. Probably because he was my first fry!
My next project for my 10G is a theme tank. I may also post it in DIY section.

Well, I have the background done for my next set of pics. I am now working on my plants and other decor for the rearrangement. I will most likely be using fewer plants and of course different but smaller ones instead. I was acually able to get 2 bunches of big foliage for the 29G today. Waiting for my drill to charge up, so I can start making more plants for that tank. The 29G, needs alot more plants, it looks so bare. Well, that is it for the updates for now. Oh! except this one of the crayfish tank. I added a little nightlite on the top of the lid and I can now see into the tank alot better.
