depends theres alot of varingin levels and diffrent design structures
at your most basic level a tub and some water
but they can be built as holes in the grown with pond liners up to a concrete reinforced pond with a 300g sump with biofilter and protien skimmer
as an ex master landscaper ive bilt prolly about 200 diffrent ponds your question on how do you make a pond is kinda like asking how do you paint a picture , the answer could fill 100 books

I'm about to start building a pond in the next year or so. I'm wondering what the best way to go about building it is. I'm wanting a small waterfall, various fountains, and I'm hoping to have some sort of underground, waterproof lighting so that I can actually view my fish. Is this a good idea?
I'm hoping anywhere from 5,000-10,000 gallons. Perhaps a small bridge build over it. I may even build two ponds with a small streamlet.
What would be the best pump to use or filtration system?
Should I go with a liner with a pond that size? Or should I just dig past the water line so that it naturally stays filled up?

past certain sizes your limited to concrete forms. its not an easy task combining 2or 3 liners to get the size pond you want although there are ways

although you could make 2 ponds and connect with a water bridge

For a pond that large I would go with a cemented one.
