Title: Penguins in a 5
Stewie - March 1, 2006 12:53 AM (GMT)
Would 2 penguin tetras (never mind I ended up with just two) be ok in a 5 gallon tank? I know it wouldn't be overstocked, and they are fine with just the 2 of them, but I don't know if they would get stressed out in a 5 gallon tank. I see no problem, but thought I'd check.

Imo schooling fish such as Penguin Tetras need to be kept in a school of 6 or more. Penguin Tetras are a larger Tetra reaching a length of around 3" so I think keeping an appropriate school in a 5g is not a good idea. There are other fish that can be housed in a 5 gallon like Neons, White Clouds, Endlers, Dwarf Puffers, Cherry Barbs, or Killifish.

I have one rummynose tetra in a 40 gallon with 5 zebra danios. Now provided it IS a tad bit bigger than a 5 gallon. The penguin tetra basically needs 2-3x his length to swim, in my opinion. Just make sure the water quality stays where it should. As long as you know you won't see their natural schooling behavior unless you have 8-10 of them in a tank that is at least 7-8x their length in length.
Good luck though. Send some pictures! Try it, and if it works, great! If not, let us all know. :) Nothing wrong with a little experimentation.

Well, I moved them out of the hospital 5 and into the 30 and may get more so they will school. I ended up with two from a very much so of a beginner friend. Anyway, several deaths later and an explenation of why cycling a tank is necessary, I ended up with 2 of them. I got them doing OK in my hospital 5, and they are now fine so I moved them into the 30. I will hopefully be posting pictures of my tanks soon.

Arn't friends great? I had one that convinced me to give her some guppies, she put them in a 10g uncycled, no filter, no heater. Three days later, they were all dead and she says to me, "don't give me anymore of those darn guppies, all they do is die!" AS IF IT'S THEIR FAULT!
Of course I didn't know she was going to put them in an uncycled tank with no filter or heater, otherwise I wouldn't have given her any to begin with.
