Title: Hi All...

Stewie - February 26, 2006 07:54 PM (GMT)
Hi all. New here. Been keeping fish (freshwater) for a while. My only tank to be proud of is my 30 gallon bowfront. It has a small angel, krib, 2 orange laser cories, and some other fish that will be removed when everybody grows. I hope to get a bigger one sometime in then next couple of years, maybe even go salt. Um... that's about all I have to say on that subject. I have several other pets including a chinese hamster, common toad, 2 bullfrogs that I raised from tadpoles (going to the pond this summer) some other smaller tanks, a dwarf rabbit, and a crested gecko. I am working on a pond that I will complete this summer, and I plan to get a turtle for it.

Hey Stewie! Welcome to AquaTopiaForum.com! We hope you will find our forum active and friendly. Have any pics of your bowfront tank? My tanks have always been rectangular, but I'd love to have an odd shaped tank.

How big of a pond are you working on? I've got one in the works myself. I'm aiming at around 10,000 gallons. I had originally thought, 30k, but I think that may be a bit too much work. :D It's awesome you have bull frogs. I caught one once that must have been at least 8" wide. The thing was humongous! What do you keep them in?

How big are the other tanks that you have?

I'll stop pestering you with questions. Hope you have a great time on the forums, and again, welcome!

Welcome to this forum. :)

Hey Mazza. I'll post some pictures of my tanks as soon as I find my camera. I know it's somewhere...

I don't know how big my pond will be. In all honesty the only "work" I've done so far is thinking about it. I will be needing help when I do start. It will be my first major pond. It still won't be too big, though. I'm on a budget.

My bullfrogs are tiny, because they only morphed out last summer. I had a bunch, but I let them go. The 2 I kept are in my room in a 10 gallon tank, which they are quickly outgrowing, and that's why their going out to the pond. Nice to meet a fellow collector, though. I have you beat with bullfrog size, though. My ex-science teacher gave me one once as a peace offering after she got me in trouble. It was full-grown and absolutley huge. I had some pictures of it with me holding it, but I can't find them, or I'd post them. It was really big, and it live in my one pond. It ate all my fish, tadpoles, and crayfish. Yeah, I let it go after that. Not to be vulgar, but I seriously could of eaten it, if I wanted.

I have a 5 gallon tank with a dwarf puffer, and a currently un-occupied 10 gallon. I will probably put my GloFish there and some cories, or something.

Nice to meet you all.

Oh, I bet those orange cories are awesome! I've seen pictures, but have never been able to find any. Cory catfish are just about my favorite fish- behind rummy nose tetra of course!

Welcome!!

Welcome Stewie!

If your soil is as hard as mine is, you'll NEED that help. I dug a 6'x3'x19" hole in my yard for a garden (I get pretty serious about gardening, too), and it took me about a month and a ton of blisters to do it. As it turns out, I would have been better off turning it into a pond, because there just isn't enough light on that area to grow even low light plants in the winter... in fact, that's not a bad idea... maybe dig it out just a bit deeper... 2-3' should do it, then stock it with a couple of young koi... I'd have to sell them as they got bigger, but with koi, the bigger they are, the more they sell for anyway. hmm... that's giving me some ideas... maybe I'll do something with that someday.

I'd love to have a full-grown bullfrog. I can't believe it ate all of your fish. It'd be something to walk out to your pond that you had worked so hard on and see only the large bullfrog.

I remember when I caught my first one. For some reason, that night frogs we're EVERYWHERE! I caught about 30 small frogs and then caught the bullfrog on my porch when I was taking them back to the house. Being a kid, I didn't know any better, so I put them all in a fairly larger 'critter keeper'. That's one of those plastic aquariums with the handle that you can purchase at like wal-mart or what not. The next morning when I woke up, I had one FAT bullfrog and an extra frog or two. I had no IDEA where they went off to! I didn't even think about the bullfrog eating all of them. Now that I look back on it I can't help but laugh. It's like I brought him in for the all-you-can-eat buffet!

those frogs sound crazy by the way welcome lol

Stewie - February 27, 2006 10:13 PM (GMT)
No, Bartier, that isn't a bullfrog. That is my common toad, Butler.

no offence but here a very normal thing to do is walk around your backyard and go "toad hunting" with golf clubs

MAZZA_402 - February 28, 2006 03:05 PM (GMT)
:o Toad hunting?!

I thought you only did that with frogs... frog .. something, can't think of the word.

bartier - February 28, 2006 08:46 PM (GMT)
we never do it with frogs toads are pests here brought over from england

MAZZA_402 - February 28, 2006 09:36 PM (GMT)
Toads and frogs are very interesting creatures. Never thought about keeping them in an aquarium though.

Polaris.northstar - February 28, 2006 10:01 PM (GMT)
you can get ADF's for aquariums

Stewie - February 28, 2006 11:04 PM (GMT)
I'm assuming he means them in an aquarium as a terrarium. ADF's and ACF's are fully aquatic. Toads don't go in water, except for breeding, and frogs are 1/2 and 1/2. Usually hop in the water when frightened.

bartier's in Australia, and they REALLY do have a toad problem there with cane toads. Isn't it amazing how something introduced that's not native to the region can cause so much trouble? They have no natural enemies there, so they have multiplied beyond belief. Interrestingly, Australia could make some money if they would catch them and export them as pets... toads are rare here, and go for anywhere from $10-20 in the pet stores that do have them. I don't know what the demand side is though.

they are discusting i have a dam in my backyard and they breed in it once a year millions of tiny toads come out of my dam and cover my backyard it is discusting if you go out at night in my backyard you will find at least 20 toads and if you are out to find them and look in the right places there are hundreds
