Title: When fish go missing.....
Description: Where do they go?

Funny story actually..

It all started when I added my zebra danios to my 40 gallon. I added a total of 6. I had just set up my new A/C 70 with skimmer attachment. The 'bar' that controls the amount of water the skimmer takes in was getting in the way, so I decided to remove it. This left a large hole at the bottom of the skimmer. Of course I didn't think anything of it. The next day I walked in and one of the zebra danios had passed, so I took him out. The rest of the fish looked fine. Over the next few days, I noticed that the zebra danios we're disappearing. As of yesterday, I only counted two plus my rummynose tetra. I had assumed the goldfish was probably eating them, or the new senegal bichir had eaten one or two.

While putting my tank up on my new stand and setting up the filters, I noticed something moving around in the bottom of the filter. Thank goodness they are clear. After a closer inspection, I noticed the outline of a fish. At this point I just had to laugh. As I emptied the filter, I didn't find just one, not even two, but THREE zebra danios in the filter. All the ones that we're missing had been swimming around in my aquaclear filter! I promptly put the 'bar' back in the skimmer to prevent any more poor fish from flying into the filter. I'm amazed that they are still going. The tank was starting to get empty looking, haha!

So, if you noticed your fish are missing, open your filter and see if there are any eyes looking back at you.

Anyone else have any disappearing fish stories? You know, where your fish just absolutely disappear without a trace?

I have a lot of snails in my tanks, so when I lose a fish of which I have several of the same kind, the snails sometimes take care of 'em so fast, I might not even notice!

Thats what I thought was happening in my case. I thought my bichir or goldfish we're eating them. Who would have thought they would have been in the filter. I don't even know what caused me to look at my filter, or else I wouldn't even have noticed they we're in there. I never thought to check because I didn't think they would make it past the impeller, let alone how they would have gotten in there. Just goes to show you that they are always in the last place you would think to look.

When I first put my rummy nose tetra in my 29 gallon I lost 2 within the first 24 hours. So, after much searching I locate the bodies in a cave and bring them to the front of the tank. I go to get a plastic bag and when I get back the 2 very dead fish are gone. I thought I was losing my mind.

Anyway, I think the culprate was my very large cory cat who hauled one of them into his little cave way up in one of my castle/rock things. So after much shaking of the castle, one fish finally falls out.

To this day, I have never found a trace of that tetra. I suspect that he was taken to a much better hiding place and then eaten.

This cory cat has eaten dead fish before, but I usually at least find the skull.

But, nothing.
Kind of a morbid story, huh

Beware that Dojo's are notorious for being able to pop caps off of inlet tubes and go in the filter, I have one of the nicer canister filters in the way that it's easy to work on, I found my dojo in there one time swimming merrily in there...goofy thing, also had a small fire eel that did the same thing, I siliconed the cap on..

I found some in the ocean. I thought they were lost, so I took them to the police station's lost and found. It's odd, because at first the police chief didn't claim them, but after 72 hours in that hot evidence room and the chief took them.

hmm... no that's just a made up story. :D
