Why, are things getting out of hand already?

bartier - February 19, 2006 07:04 AM (GMT)
i think they will be needed in the future so i voted yes but not just yet

Leema - February 19, 2006 09:50 AM (GMT)
Assuming this site continues to get bigger, it will need mods.
However, not right now.

erin - February 19, 2006 02:03 PM (GMT)
No, I don't think we need any more mods as of yet

Coast Runner - February 19, 2006 11:56 PM (GMT)
No I don't think they are needed just yet. I've found from experience that when you start bringing in too many people it get very political. Which is happening on another site that I'm with.

Octoberfest - February 20, 2006 12:33 AM (GMT)
meh, theres no dire need at the moment.

jadefoodog - February 20, 2006 02:23 AM (GMT)
ehhh dont beg to be a mod it only ensures you wont get to be.

when there is a need for more mods they will add them and choose who they want to be

bartier - February 20, 2006 06:22 AM (GMT)
at the moment everyone is getting on if only once more people joined it could just stay fight free

Leema - February 20, 2006 07:55 AM (GMT)
Mods are needed for more than just fights.
Mods sort topics posted in the wrong sections, correct peoples codes, etc.

MAZZA_402 - February 20, 2006 02:40 PM (GMT)
I'm sure we will add a moderator or two once we start getting above 250 members. Right now Sergeant Major and I can keep an eye on the forums, but when we get to that many members, it may prove to be a time consuming task.

You guys are pretty good though. ;) We haven't had any problems yet!

Leema - February 21, 2006 05:09 AM (GMT)

Wow. Maybe what I said was an understatement.

Admin harrassment will be dealt with accordingly in a timely and efficient manner. Rebelious members will NOT BE TOLERATED!!!! J/K ;) :D

Sergeant Major - February 21, 2006 02:57 PM (GMT)
That sounds like the admin doing the harrassing... Mazza, ban yourself at once! :)

Heh, of course I favor our members... we exist to serve them! Why do you think we have to view the google ads, but they don't?

Octoberfest - February 22, 2006 09:49 PM (GMT)
well, this topic has turned into a smiley/spam war.....

bartier - February 22, 2006 10:05 PM (GMT)
it was pretty pointless from the start :)

Sergeant Major - February 22, 2006 10:13 PM (GMT)
Ok, well we have been giving it some thought, and are seriously considering adding moderators. If we did though, right now, each person would only be over one forum. There would also be criteria for being a moderator. So far, we are thinking about the following requirements:
  • Must have over 25 posts
  • Must have good record with the forum
  • Must be active at LEAST once per week on average
  • Once a specific forum is chosen, must be able to show some general knowledge (we are flexible in this in that some forums are too general
  • Submit an Advertisement for AquaTopiaForum to one new site every week (search engine, classified ad, other forums, etc.)
  • Be responsible for referring at least one new member per month
  • Vote on each of the voting links to the right at least 3 times per week (different days per, multiple votes on aquarank for example durring the same day will not count)

I'd like to get your all's input on this though.

Leema - February 22, 2006 11:00 PM (GMT)
Reasonable guidlines - but for the future. ;)

Too many sites I go to have too many moderators for the number of active individuals. It devalues the status.

I think these four

are a bit iffy. I don't believe a moderator's job is to advertise - just moderate.

Sergeant Major - February 22, 2006 11:21 PM (GMT)
I figured by adding those, a: the value of a moderator goes up, and b: they will actually have something to moderate.

Without more members, there will be nothing much to moderate. Ultimately, the definition of a moderator is someone that simply reads the posts and alerts the admin if there is a problem, which isn't very different than users, with the exception that moderators can take some actions immediately if the problem is severe enough.

Octoberfest - February 22, 2006 11:45 PM (GMT)
yeah i think you should remove those four aswell. we could be as nice as possible and still get no new member because they are already set on a certain site, or too busy, or something of that nature.
leema said it perfectly, its not a mods job to advertise, just moderate. mods are the janitorial staff of the forum. its not really a privlage to be a mod, just a responsibility. it would be sad to have to meet those guidelines just to lend a extra helping hand.

flamingonhot - February 23, 2006 12:27 AM (GMT)
ok, like said at the moment I don't think you need them..maybe like 50 more members or whatever.

Also I agree with what was said above. It would be good to advertise and try to refer people but HAVING to actually put a rule on that is maybe going a bit too far.

MAZZA_402 - February 23, 2006 02:38 AM (GMT)
I think each and every one of you prove a valid point. We are trying every way possible to get more members on the site. Advertising the site seems to be working very well. Such as telling others about the site. The reason we wanted to make it a 'requirement' was again, like SM said, to give the mods something more to do. Instead of thinking of it as a requirement, lets remove all of them and say those are just a suggestion, or something nice to do if you can. We do appreciate all the help that we can get. Mods on our forum can be looked at as the 'Advice Team.' Those that have a good knowledge base of a particular aquarium 'niche.' These members are the goto people when it comes to a certain question or getting sound advice. They also have the added ability of taking care of their forum. Instead of thinking of it as a responsibility, think of it as a reward. You have worked hard to gain the knowledge that you have, and now you have the opportunity to feel more 'involved' in a forum by volunteering for a position as a moderator / advice team member. Members will come to you with questions and you will have the chance to help guide them on there way. Of course, this will make more sense when we get additional members and are able to specialize the forums, for example, a cichlid forum, or loach forum, etc. This is where the expertise will be more specialized.

Sergeant Major - February 23, 2006 03:07 AM (GMT)
Well, this is why we asked for your input...

After thinking about it some more, "Be responsible for referring at least one new member per month" definately seems a bit extreme...

And although "Submit an Advertisement for AquaTopiaForum to one new site every week (search engine, classified ad, other forums, etc.)" is really easy to do... I could fold on that one, too...

But this one, I still agree with: "Vote on each of the voting links to the right at least 3 times per week (different days per, multiple votes on aquarank for example durring the same day will not count)"

I still agree with it because if you're not proud enough of a forum that you're willing to vote for it frequently, how can you be proud enough of it to put your best effort into the job you do as moderator? I will say it should be on average, as we wouldn't want to demote someone just for going on vacation or getting sick, etc.

Octoberfest - February 23, 2006 03:47 AM (GMT)
so...... is there a way to track the votes? someone could just take credit for someone elses vote. and besisdes, while it does bring in the odd member, this site is about the content, not exactly the popularity. theres a fine line, so dont think i believe you can run a forum with no members, you just have to find a balance.

Leema - February 23, 2006 04:46 AM (GMT)
I'd expect a moderator to be dedicated enough to the site at hand to vote everyday. :P
But, to make it a rule... Just makes it seem more of a ploy or something... I dunno.

bartier - February 23, 2006 05:27 AM (GMT)
im up for the voting thing it is easy enough

bartier - February 23, 2006 05:32 AM (GMT)
i should have read over this more carefully i thought you were talking about all members but i think mods should have to put in more than the others for the site

bartier - February 23, 2006 05:36 AM (GMT)
i just voted and it took me less than a minute to vote on all the sites in the link i think that is very easy to do even everyday i think i we can spare a minute of our time

QUOTE (Octoberfest @ Feb 23 2006, 03:47 AM)
so...... is there a way to track the votes?

Yes.

I agree there is a ballance to be struck. On the one hand, more members brings in more content... on the other hand, there is a certain amount of content that I need to finish putting up, like the rest of those fish fast fact sheets.

bartier - February 23, 2006 11:10 AM (GMT)
the fish fast facts are they only added by you or can others add them or send them to you to be checked out first?

Octoberfest - February 23, 2006 01:21 PM (GMT)
bartier, its kind of annoying when you post 3 times in a matter of 9 minutes in a single thread. just click the little "edit' button. it just gets annoying.

The FAST fact sheets are only added by me... however, we strongly encourage the rest of you to write more detailed profiles. The fast fact sheets are just some basic facts, and are going on the website side... As more detailed profiles are done however, we will link to them from the fast fact sheets, to give the person more information.
