Looks great. What are you using for lighting? Do you have any closeup pics of the tank? :)

danj - February 12, 2006 11:15 PM (GMT)
The lighting is from Aquatraders.com. 48in 260watt pc. Not the best light out there, but it seems to work ok. I have some closer pics but they are fuzzy.:( I will get some more.

bartier - February 13, 2006 05:26 AM (GMT)
why is there a light in the sump

Leema - February 13, 2006 08:58 AM (GMT)
It's a refugium. Algae grows there instead of in the tank. The bright light encourages their growth, and they consume all the 'nutrients' and so prevents algae growth in the tank.
Or, at least, that's my understanding...

Look forward to seeing the progression of the tank, danj. :)

bartier - February 13, 2006 10:52 AM (GMT)
learn something new everyday :)

danj - February 14, 2006 12:28 AM (GMT)
Thanks Leema. I am having a little trouble with the new skimmer. To many micro bubbles. I will let it breakin a few more days and see what happens.
And you are right on with the explanation of the light in the sump. Have live rock in it.

Perfectblue - February 15, 2006 01:10 AM (GMT)
Hey Danj what brand of Protein skimmer are you using?

danj - February 15, 2006 01:53 AM (GMT)
My skimmer is a Coralife Super Skimmer Needle Wheel Protein Skimmer. I am not real pleased with it yet. I am hoping it will start to work better in a few days. After breakin.

Perfectblue - February 15, 2006 03:18 AM (GMT)
From what I've heard Coralife Super Skimmers are pretty good. Why don't you like it?

danj - February 16, 2006 01:41 AM (GMT)
It did not seem to be working properly. But as the days go by it seems to be getting better. I think it just needs to get broke-in good. Today i have a much better skim.
Guess i am in to big of a rush for things to work  And as we all know nothing good ever happens fast in a saltwater tank.

Nice anemone you have there. Would a clown adopt that kind of anemone? Still its a cool anemone. Might get myself one soon.

danj - February 18, 2006 06:23 PM (GMT)
No. Clowns are not known to adopt to this one. Bubble tip or some long tenacle anemones are suppose to be good for clowns.

Great pics! How did you set up your sump? Hopefully one day I'm wanting to turn my 40 gallon breeder into a salt water setup. I'd love to have a nice sump on it. Is your tank drilled or do you have a CSO?

danj - February 18, 2006 10:10 PM (GMT)
Thanks. I wish my tank was drilled. I just have an overflow box on back. And instead of using bio-balls i am going with live rock for filtration. And i have the skimmer in the sump.

bartier - March 2, 2006 11:18 AM (GMT)
what does drilled mean

MAZZA_402 - March 2, 2006 02:01 PM (GMT)
You have a trickle filter which skims the top of the water off, and then it falls down behind the 'screen' and then exits the tank through a small hole drilled in the side.

For those that don't have pre-drilled tanks and don't want to spend the money getting it done, they can purchase a Continuous Siphon Overlfow, which pulls the water off and forces it down to the sump instead.

How do you like your CSO? Does it get the job done? Have you had problems where it stopped getting water to the sump? IE Lost suction?

Since those pics were taken i have changed the lighting to Metal Halides. Have added more live rock to the main tank and sump. My Coralife skimmer is working very well now.
And i also now use culligan water for the water changes and topoff. My RO unit will not remove all nitrates that i have. :( Need to buy a DI unit.

That is the way get my RO water. I go to the local grocery store with my 10 or so bottles and fill them up, although in the future I would love to invest in a unit. :)

My 55 gal tank has been doing fairly good. It has come a long way since i set it up. However i seem to have a problem with hair alge. I will soon be moving everything to a 75 gal and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on getting rid of the alge in the move.

:music: i cant see the pics. there gone

r33f-boy - May 24, 2006 12:25 PM (GMT)
I'm guessing that you could get some "Algone" to clean out hair algae. I'm not really sure though. You would have to check it out.

danj - May 24, 2006 11:38 PM (GMT)
Bronz. I removed the old photos and have not put up any new ones. Sorry

danj - July 15, 2006 08:33 PM (GMT)
Here is a few shots of the 75 gal. I have a total of about 90gal of water tank, sump and fuge.

Here are some pics of my 75g. I tried to get some pics of my coral beauty angelfish. But it does not want to stay put for long.
