I went in to PETsMART thinking this was going to be another typical massive petstore chain with fish-ignorant employees and very little selection. Boy was I ever wrong! PETsMART had a large supply section, a very large freshwater fish section, even a large plant selection. All of their fish, with the exception of the bettas, looked healthy and happy. The only reason they failed to get 5 stars was because they keep their bettas in the typical small plastic jugs, and they don't carry the specialty substrates such as Eco-Complete or Aragonite based substrates. Their prices were outstanding.

I would agree that PETsMART usually has a great selection, but I think that each store varies some on staff quality. The PETsMART where I live have some pretty fish-ignorant staff.
Employees at the PETsMART where I live will do anything to sell you something. They will sell somebody fish and aquariums at the same time without asking any questions. They will try to get you to buy products such as test strips that are not accurate at all. Sometimes an employee will be helpful and informed and sometimes they are not. I have even seen them telling people that certain fish will be okay in a tank that is too small. They will try to get you to buy things that you don't need. Also, they will usually tell you that "Top Fin" products are "always" the best. Well, guess who makes "Top Fin" products- PETsMART.
Sometimes their "Top Fin" stuff is okay, but some of their stuff is junk.
Of course, each store is different and each shift of staff members is different. Just don't fall susceptible to buying any species of fish there that you haven't already researched and planned for. They may not be suited for your aquarium at all.
I will say, that their fish are usually very healthy and most stores have warranties on their fish.
Some PETsMART locations are great such as the one that Sergeant Major describes. :D
Their betta situation is pretty sad.
Just be careful at different locations, they are not all equally informed and helpful.
i have to agree with you! The one i go to has a big selection of fish. But a small selection of live plants and structre for the fish :star: :star: :star: :halfstar:
