i saw these fish the other day in the shop they were around about 2" and were bright red with specks all over them does anyone know what they might be?

Hemichromis bimaculatus

Jewel Cichlid

They're one of the few africans you can successfully mix with new world cich's and maintain a suitable environment. They have pretty closely meshed water needs etc. (more closely matched to new world then general malawi or tang cichs).

wow!! those are beautiful!!! :o

yeah does anyone know how much they cost and any info on breeding?

fnesr - February 13, 2006 05:22 AM (GMT)

They cost $4.95 (AU) at my fish store. They are not hard to breed as such (decent parents) but it can be rather hard to find a compatable pair, not quite as simple as throwing a male and fem together like some other types of cich.

what cichlids are there that look nice and a pair would fit nicely into a 40 gallon breeder

A few are...

Convict.
Rainbow cichlid.
Cutteri.
T-bar cichlid.
Blue eyed cichlid.
Honduran Red Point.
Firemouth.
Blue Acara.
Port Acara.

Some of the smaller rift lake cich's also if you were to go African such as yellow lab's (elec yellow). Allthough these generally do better in a herem type situation.

i am thinking convicts or blue acara taking note i won't be looking into these until my oscars outgrow my tank though does anyone know the average prices for these fish

bartier - February 13, 2006 07:10 AM (GMT)
doing some research leaning towards convicts because apparently blue acara aren't as commonly found and are harder to tell the difference between male and female

AiWen - February 14, 2006 04:13 AM (GMT)
Yeah, convicts are very easy to breed. Most aquarists say they are "just add water" type of breeding fish. They run about $3 for a 1.5-3 inch one at Petsmart.

are there any fish that aren't to hard to breed however pet shops would be interested in buying them

Sergeant Major - February 15, 2006 04:10 AM (GMT)
certain killifish... but it would depend on how fancy your pet store is... make sure you don't pick an annual killifish though, as they can be much more difficult to breed (remove and dry out the eggs, etc).

i think i might wait and see when i get a bit closer to buying these fish as to what i will get still probably about a year till i do this
