Well I was going to say base cabinets can make a great stand... but you're not looking for that. Plus they can be more expensive than just buying a stand outright.

It's really going to depend upon how simple or complex you want it to be though. You could build the whole thing out of 2x4's with a couple sheets of MDF. It wouldn't look very nice though, not to mention you'd have to seal the MDF REALLY well since it's going to be in a wet environment.

Here's a basic design similar to what I was describing: http://saltaquarium.about.com/library/blank/bldiy2x4cabinetframe.htm

Here's a DIY cabinet design: http://saltaquarium.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=saltaquarium&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.garf.org%2Fstand.html

And here's what I would call a BAD idea: http://saltaquarium.about.com/od/algaemarineplantcare/l/bldiyaqstand.htm

I have two of the stands shown on the link below. The one pictured holds a 30 over a 37? gal flat back hex. The other holds a 20gal over a 30 gal terrarium. They're made with 3/4 plywood, 1x3's, and some 1x2 scraps. Everything is glued and screwed. The hazard with a lightweight stand like these is lateral movement. A partial ply back would make a big difference but I didn't like the look. However I would use it on anything larger.
