Title: No Plants?

This looks like a good start for your forum.
I would like to suggest that you start up fresh water planted page.
I rarely go to many of the others available here.

Len,
We will probably do that when we get some more members... for now I think people can talk about plants or invertabrates in the Tank Talk or fresh/saltwater/pond 101 forums. Thanks for the feedback though.
We will also add a brackish section when there's enough members to support it.

id replace the equipment page with a plants page. 3 out of my 4 tanks have plants in them

I've always wondered how people clean the substrate when they have live plants.
That is part of why I've never tackled live plants.
Stupid question:
What kind of substrate do you have and how do you clean it?

I have eco-complete substrate, and when I clean it, I gravel vac it, but I basically just don't clean it. I have clams and ghost shrimp in there with the anacharis, which keeps it pretty well cleaned without my gravel vac.

I have normal black gravel in my planted tanks, and I basically vacuum around the plants.

i have black sand and play sand. to answer you i dont clean it. you get some MTS (malasian trumpet snails) that both clean where you cant get and arorate the substrate.
durin the day they are in the substrate they dont come up till night. and most fish cant touch them cause of a protective trap door

As far as gravel vacuuming the substrate in a planted tank... you generally shouldn't. The waste in the gravel or eco-complete for that matter is converting it into food for the plants. Of course this is in a moderately stocked tank and one that isn't overfed. Eco-complete has enzymes and bacteria that naturally break down fish waste. Sand you can hol the vac just a hair over it and if it starts to suck up sand, just move it away from it. It's generally pretty easy.
Then again, I take it upon myself to redecorate my tank every time I clean it. LoL. I have plant anchors on all my plants, so if they get uprooted, they just sink back down to the bottom. Pretty easy to replant.

If we get enough members interested in starting a planted section we will definitely start it off early.
I'll tell you what. I'll make the forum and if we get at least 10 topics we will leave it up, if not, we will wait until there are more members and interest. Meanwhile, enjoy the new freshwater planted section!
