Title: Clown Trouble

danj - April 5, 2007 11:42 PM (GMT)
Hi! Have not posted here in some time, but i have a small problem. I have had a maroon clown for over a year and it has always done well with a my other fish. (Damsel Green Chromis,Coral Beauty and a Blenny. I recently put in a Yellow Tang. Well the first day was ok but now the clown chases the tang when ever they get close to each other. Is this going to be a problem or will they get over it. I read all the compat. charts and they say a clown and tang should get along. Any suggestions?

Is the Tang threatening an anenome favorite of the Clown? How big is your tank?

danj - April 7, 2007 12:27 AM (GMT)
No. No fish bother the anenome. Not even the clown. The tank is a 75gal. I have found that clowns can be territorial. And the tang was add just recently.
I have decided to set up a 10 gal tank for the clown. Dont know what else to do.

A 10 gallon for a clown is too small. Let them stay with eat other for awhile to let them get used. If not then you can remove which one you want.

Maroons are one of the most aggressive species of Clownfish. Their aggression only gets worse with age and it becomes very difficult to introduce new fish once they establish their territory. You could try rearranging the rocks as it might disrupt the Clown and put them on equal ground as far as territories are concerned. Are they occasionally chasing each other or are they doing damage to one another?

It may be easier to return the Tang. However, one of the reasons I have several tanks is because if something does not work, I solve the problem by adding a tank to separate the problems, as you are considering. :D

I found this out to late. And i can not return the Tang. So for the time i have put the Maroon clown in a separate tank. It is only a 10gal but if that is to small i can get a 20gal. Is that large enough?
And the clown would not let the tang out of rocks. Every time the tang tried to come out of hiding the clown would chase it back in. SOOOO! out came the clown.
They appear to be doing well this morning.

Try taking the clown out for a few days and putting him back in. It works when I have an aggressive fish.

That is good news, danj. Can you post some pictures for us? Always like to see the photos. :)

I'll try some pics for you. Not much at photos :(

Here are a few pics.
The first is the 10 gal tank. Not much there. The rest are of my 75gal.

Nice tank and condy.

Nice set up danj! Thanks for the photos. I'm sure your Tang is relieved. ;) Was the Clown hiding somewhere in that 10 gallon?

Great pictures. Tank looks very nice, I like the way you've placed the rock work. Even a 20 gallon is too small in my opinion for a full grown Maroon but it should be fine as a temporary home.

Good luck and keep us updated on how your aquariums are doing. :)

Yes it is in there some where. I will be getting a 20gal for the clown in the near future. I had a 20gal tank but it got broken somehow. Now will have to get a new one.
