Title: Live Cultures -fish food

Eclipse - March 4, 2007 07:27 AM (GMT)
Ok so I like to do everything in advance and I have decided i am going to get some or all of the following fish for my tank (once i get it and it is set up correctly):

Undulate Trigger
Yellowhead Moray Eel
Queen Angel
A Puffer (haven't decided on the kind just yet"
and POSSIBLY a Bamboo Shark, going to read more on them first

Anyways what i am looking for is clearly a cheap way to feed all of these without really having to buy too much food. Obviously i can buy frozen or live fish (small) and/or shrimp but that would get pricey feeding all of them those on a daily basis.

Basically does anyone have links or explainations on how I could possibly culture food such as slightly larger shrimp to eat, such as prawn i think? or something similar.

I do realize that the Queen Angel prefers to eat sponges and Tunicates so is there a way i could culture either of those?

The puffer isn't a big problem considering he will most lightly eat the shrimp and what not as well as some craps and snails i throw in there.

Any possible cultures for any of these fish would be awesome, thanks for your help.

I think it would be a lot easier to breed minnows for them to eat... Setting up a breeder tank on the side wouldn't be a bad way to go...

Ok so i looked into breeding guppies and it looked fairly easy so i think once my tank begins to cycle i'm going to go out and get 2 small tanks (one for fry and one for adults), that way when i get my fish i should have a decent supply shortly after.

Does anyone have any experience with Queen Angels? Do I really have to feed them sponge and/or tunicates, or is there something else much easier and cheaper to obtain that they will eat?

Also I realize you are suppose to only use live fish as treats for the normal fish but with a Bamboo shark what can i feed him on a consistant basis that he will eat and that wont eventually run me dry?

What size tank is this? I've read your other post but you've mentioned a couple different size tanks. Your stocking list is pretty heavy although it depends on what size tank you are going with. Even a small species of shark such as a Bamboo would need a very large tank and isn't compatible with most species of fish. Queen Angels get very large and can become very aggressive towards fellow tankmates. I would personally add this fish last if you do keep one.

I wouldn't suggest feeding live foods as they are not very nutritional and can possibly carry diseases. Frozen preparations, and fresh seafood(shrimp, squid, scallops, clams, etc.) should be fed. What some aquarists do is mix up their own food using a blender and freeze it. This usually consists of fresh seafood, Nori or spirulina flake, and a nutritional supplement such as Selcon or Zoe. This way you can choose what specific foods you use and always have some ready. A Queen Angelfish will consume meaty foods, angelfish preperations, as well as some veggies.
