Title: Did you know?

Did you know that a crab can live through being in frozen suspended animation (ala Buck Rogers) for at least 3 days? I bet MAZZA did.

What type of crab and where on the Earth?

Sarge, you wanna take this one? I know it was a crab caught in Wilmington, NC.... that's about it. It was actually frozen for more like 4-5 days. It was alive, but not funtioning well...and died shortly thereafter. Come on Sarge, help me out.

I'll give you a hand... We we're out on the pier in Wilmington... or I was. Sergeant Major was back at the hotel. I dropped my line closer to shore and noticed that it felt EXTREMELY heavy. I figured it was hung until I was able to start reeling it in... Low and behold I saw this humongous "ball" on the end of my line. I had NO idea what it was! By the time I got it onto the pier, it started moving around. IT was a GIGANTIC stone crab. Its shell was at least 6 to 7 inches wide and weighed a ton. Deciding that this would be the ultimate aquarium pet, we put it in a big styrofoam box. It barely fit to say the least. We ended up fishing for the next two days and caught over 100 fish. The crab ended up eating a few, but oh well. We did everything we could to get the crab home in one piece. We kept him on ice to slow down his metabolism.... maybe it was to keep him from taking off our hands and fingers... hmm... but anyway... we got him home and he was still alive. We acclimated him to a tank and two days later it was like a bad night at captain d's. REALLY bad smell. He was cool to have though. Sergeant Major ended up hooking a lot of tangled seaweed and ended up pulling up tons of small starfish and a small crab. You should ask him how he got THEM home. Would have been cool if he could have kept them alive though.

I've got pictures of this thing somewhere. I'll have to send them to you. When I got it home, my wife pulled it out to make sure it was OK. She said it was crawling all over the floor. She couldn't have had it out of the water for more than a minute or two. It was pretty cool though. I wish we could have gotten it to survive the trip home. I'll try to find those pictures and post them as soon as I can.
