Well there isn't to much to it really, its on the day when Captain Cook first came to Australia in 1770. But now its just a day everyone gets off work and have a BBQ and just spend time with family.

Sounds like Labor Day. Those days are always good to have to break up the routine though, and get people together for good times and good food. :)

Any day like that is a good day! Hope you had fun. We have a "Columbus Day" to celebrate the landing of Christopher Columbus, but we do not celebrate with a day off, for most anyway, not as SM describes for Labor Day and which is more like your Australia Day. There is also a debate about whether Columbus was the first to arrive and whether he actually DID arrive on what is not the continental U.S.

Well the first to actually discover Australia were the Dutch however they left the country as they believed the land was not good enough to sustain there flora and fauna and therefore could make them no money. Captain Cook was actually the first to map out the eastern coast of Australia.
