Title: Failproof double sump
Description: need advice

Does anyone have any experience with running a double sump for one tank?

The reason I ask is that when I do get my 125g tank, I would like to run two 75g sumps on it at the same time, but it would absolutely have to be fail safe. But I'm not sure how to do that with two different sumps.

Are you going to be connecting both of the sumps or will they be separate? What are you most concerned about?

Well, I don't know if I would run one sump off of another one, or both off the main tank... I'm most concerned about spillage... say one pump fails... that could be VERY bad with that much water. On the other hand, if I can figure out a way to make it failsafe, then I would have a total of about 275 gallons of water, which would let me put a LOT of fish, etc. in the tank... or at least enough to make it look great.

You can try making an overflow sump. I tryed it with a 5 gallon drilled for my 29 gallon tank. It was about 2 inches higher than my main tank and a powerhead sucks water into the sump and it overflow from a tube back into the tank. This wont cause any problems when the power goes out.

Just keep BOTH sumps on the same level.
Drill and plumb both together with bulkheads,
have tank drain into one, return pump in the
other. This will act like one LARGE sump.
Drill and plumb at the lowest point possible.

I am setting this up right now for my new 60g.
I have drilled two 10g tanks. One will be setup
higher than the other, but drain into the lower
one. Return pump will be in lower sump. I have
an elbow and pipe to control water level in the
upper sump. I will post pictures as soon as
everything is plumbed up.
