Title: Am I asking for trouble?

I have a firefish in my 10 gallon reef tank... I just added a blue damsel that is really out competing the firefish for food. I'm planning on moving my damsel in my 29 gallon to the 10 gallon, and the firefish to the 29 gallon. The only problem... I run an open tank with a coralife dual pc light over it. Would it be advisable to try and house a firefish in an aquarium like this? Will I have to worry about him jumping out? I know they are prone to, but do they actively search for a way out of the tank?

Well I've kept my Firefish in an open top tank for about one year now and he has not even attempted to jump out. It really depends on the individual fish although when under stress there is a greater chance of Firefish jumping. I don't think Firefish jump out intentionally. I've notice that if I make quick movements around the tank he gets spooked and darts around the tank.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. So you want to house the two Damsels in your 10 gallon and move the Firefish to your 29 gallon? Well then why not just keep both of the Damsels in your 29 gallon and leave the Firefish in the 10 gallon? Housing Damsels together is not such a great idea in my experience. There are aggressive fish and may fight with one another especially in smaller tanks. It might work but keep an eye out for aggressive behavior.

Hmm... I figured it would be better to have the firefish in with the very peaceful goby and clownfish pair. They are all slow going, so I thought he would have a better time. I may try it and see how it goes. Both the damsels seem to be pretty peaceful. I may just move the damsel over to the 29.... but then again, it's back to only the firefish. Have any recommendations on good nano fish to house with my firefish?

It was a false alarm, for sure. I went home last night after work and decided to feed the 10 gallon. I told my wife that we we're going to have to move some fish, but she didn't believe me that the little damsel was eating all of the food. We went into the office and dropped some food in the 10 gallon. The firefish has definitely gotten smarter and faster. I'd say he got just as much to eat as the damsel.

Plus, the damsel acts like a ditherfish and the firefish stays out MUCH more now.
