Title: The Day Sergeant Major ALMOST Bought An Eel

MAZZA_402 - January 11, 2007 02:47 AM (GMT)
Haha! Strange topic I know. Sergeant Major came down today to go do some aquarium reviews and hang out for awhile, and while we we're at a local petco, which I must say has an unbelievable amount of healthy, well taken care of fish, we found a snowflake moray eel. We decided to go check out some of the other stores in the area before coming back. After a few hours, we manage to find ourselves (Sergeant Major, myself, and my wife) back at the petco contemplating the purchase of a brand-spanking-new moray eel. I've been giving him a hard time all day, but I think he started into that tank for over an hour trying to talk himself into getting it. I believe he could honestly give an unbelievable, detailed description of that fish.

On a side note, he ended up going with a scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp and a scooter blenny... much more boring than an eel, but hey, to every one their own, right?

Then again, I didn't buy it either.... partly because my wife didn't want a snake in the house, lol. She did admit that it was cute, so she must be warming up to the idea, right? Who knows. That always gets me in trouble. She mentioned getting an aquarium over a year ago... a small fish bowl. Now I keep tons of aquariums and run a forum. She's careful with saying she would like to have something. You never know, it may turn into one of my crazy hobbies.

Sergeant Major did call when he got back into his neck of the woods and promptly informed me that the eels we're MUCH cheaper up there. I guess it's a good thing he talked himself out of the purchase. I was making up all KINDS of facts to encourage him to purchase it, but at the end of the day, it seems common sense won.

Back here in my town... my wife and I went to the doctor today and found out, finally, that we are having a girl! We've been trying to find out what sex of baby we we're having so we could finish the nursery, but the baby just wasn't cooperating. We we're finally blessed with a 99% chance that we do indeed have a girl. I must say, I'm pretty excited! It's our first child so it's definitely a new experience. Only 2 more months and we'll have a bouncing baby girl. It's hard to believe how quickly time goes by.

Back to the story, however....

After all that time trying to convince Sergeant Major to purchase a eel or dwarf lion... I ended up purchasing a small fish for my nano 10 gallon project. I purchased a damsel... exact kind I'm not sure... It sort of looks like a mix. It's almost all blue with just a HINT of yellow on the underside and the tail. It almost looks like a yellow-belly damsel, but then again, it may be a blue devil. He seems very peaceful though. He's in there with a firefish and a few corals. They seem to be getting along well though. If problems arise, the firefish will definitely be going in my 29 gallon, but for now, they definitely add a splash of color to the tank. I was hoping to find a small fish to go along with the firefish, and as luck would have it, I found that small damsel.

All-in-all, it was a pretty productive day. We ended up getting some great pictures for our store reviews. We may even have an opportunity to start a fish club here in the east Tennessee area. We'll be sure to keep you posted.

Just a quick hint... I've been trying to come up with the perfect name, and I haven't checked to see if they exist yet, but just to give you an idea:

The Tennessee Reef Society (TRS)
The Tennessee Marine Society (TMS)

Wow. I come up with some pretty boring names. Who knows, maybe one of them will stick. Feel free to post some ideas, if you want. I know most of you are experts at coming up with names.

Anyway, I'll end this somewhat lengthy post with that note.

It's been a long day and I'm ready to get some much sought after sleep.

Sincerely,

Zac

The bottom line was that sure, the eel might have fit for the time being, but it wouldn't in the long run. That's something that will have to wait for the 125g... which coincidentally might come this next christmas (wife already hinted it was ok).

As for a name, how about the Tennessee Reefers? might get a few search warrants executed on meeting dates... but hey...

You know, someone had mentioned that, but I thought the same thing you did.... high powered lighting used for 'growing' things... reefers in the club name... sounds like a bad idea, LOL!

Sounds good on the 125. I'll have to see it to believe it, of course. After you told me you had it in lay-a-way... right.

I'll keep my eyes peeled on those club names. How are those mollies you bought for your tank doing? Have you started acclimating them yet?

I have a feeling I am going to have to move the firefish to my 29. I put some flake in the tank and that damsel went CRAZY! He was flying all over the tank and in no time flat he had eaten all the flake. I don't even think the firefish knew what was going on!

Great thread. Eels especially Snowflakes are very interesting fish and although getting one would have been cool it would be best to wait until you set up a larger tank.

As for the club name I personally like The Tennessee Reef Society (TRS). Since you guys didn't know if the names existed I did a quick search for aquarium clubs in Tennessee. I'm not sure if you know this but there is already a East Tennessee Reef Club(ETRC), and here is their website http://www.easttnreefclub.com/. And what do you as I was searching I came across the Tennessee Reefers Club. Yep there is actually a club named that.

MAZZA. Yeah Damsels are very aggressive especially towards peaceful fish and although it may not be harassing your Firefish it will more than likely dominate the tank. I had the same situation when I added a Wrasse to my 20g which houses my Firefish. The Wrasse would eat all the food and not let the Firefish get any, so he had to go.

Yeah. I noticed that this morning as well. I'm going to move the firefish to the 29 gallon. I have a yellowtail damsel in the 29 now, so I may move him to the 10 gallon with the other damsel. Then it will be just the two clowns, the yellow watchman, and the firefish. Wish me luck catching him, though, lol.

Thanks for checking into those names for me. I know there is a club about 1 hour south of where I'm at, and the ETRC is up around Sergeant Majors area. We we're looking to start something right in the middle. We have quite a following for reef aquariums here where I live, evidently. I thought I was the only one, haha! It amazed me to see how many people kept aquariums like this and how many we're interested in starting a club. We even have a pet store, Michael's Aquatic Den, which is willing to sponsor us. Pretty cool. I'm going to start drawing up some ideas for the Tennessee Reef Society... I'd like to take it to a broader level, and include information and material for those not in the local area, as in a members only area online. That way we could get reef enthusiasts from all over.

I may even start a sub forum on this forum once we get it going. Who knows. I'll keep you posted.

How 'bout ECTRC? East Central Tennessee Reef Club

Very interesting name fishyfry. I'll add it to the list.

was the eel supposed to go in a sw tank or a fw tank?

Sergeant Major - January 23, 2007 11:32 PM (GMT)
Saltwater... it was a baby snowflake eel. But I would have had to have upgraded tanks within about 6 mo for it... plus it would have precluded me from keeping a lot of the other things that I like keeping.
