Title: Current projects... too many to count!

MAZZA_402 - January 7, 2007 09:11 PM (GMT)
Hey guys. Just thought I would share some of my current projects and some recent pics.

My 29 gallon reef is still doing great, and I've even added a bubble tip anemone. We removed about 20lbs of live rock, still leaving about 60lbs, and started another 10 gallon reef just the other day. The tank actually appears to be housing fish, instead of rock, haha!

The 29 gallon has a 192 watt coralife PC fixture, rena XP2 canister filter for flow, and a maxijet 1200 powerhead. It also has crushed aragonite substrate and about 60 lbs of live rock.

The 10 gallon is definitely off to a great start. I'm going to purchase a new PC light here for it very soon, as well as another one to be used over a sump. I found a great article the other day on drilling a tank for a fool-proof sump setup, so I'm going to give it a try in the next month or two.

My wife and I went to a LFS just the other day and managed to get some great deals on a firefish goby and a peppermint shrimp. The shrimp is definitely a character. He's always on the move. The goby tends to be a little shy, but aren't they all? I've got a yellow watchman goby that comes out to see what's going on in the living room every now and then.

The 10 gallon has a standard flourescent fixture, for the moment, and a maxijet 600 powerhead.

I've also gotten into parrots here recently. Sergeant Major thinks I'm crazy, but these birds are awesome. Even though my wife already thinks I have WAY too many hobbies, she finally, but reluctantly, let me get one. This soon turned into three, however.

The birds are a blue series black masked lovebird, and the pair is a pair of Fischer's lovebirds. They are my breeders... although I don't think they've gotten the hang of it. Three clutches later, and not a single hatch... not too sure what's going on there, but they are great fun to watch. The blue series is quite the character. You never know quite what to expect from him. As I'm typing this, he's behind me trying to fit inside his water bowl (taking a bath) and slinging water everywhere.

As far as personal news, my wife and I just found out in June that we we're going to be having a baby, which is now due in March. Not too long! I've also moved to a different store for our company, which amounts to a 15 minute daily drive compared to a 2 hour daily drive back and forth to work.

That's it for the moment, anyway. I'll post progress on my 10 gallon reef / sump combo, which hopefully soon will be upgraded to a 20 gallon with 20 gallon sump. I've got to get the plumbing down pat before I do anything else. I don't think I would be able to keep fish anymore if I flooded the house. :o Lol.

I have not seen you online for a while. Both of your tanks look great and I can't wait to see the progress. Good choice with the Firefish, they are such great fish. I've had my Firefish for about a year now. Yeah Firefish are very shy fish although when kept alone or with other peaceful fish they seem to stay out in the open more. That is a very small Bubble Tip, how long have you had it? I see that your Clownfish has already begin hosting in the Anemone.

You have some very nice Birds there. Birds are very nice pets to keep and provide you with enjoyment for years. I currently have 5 Budgies which are great Birds. I actually begin with a male and female which soon started breeding and now I have the two adults along with three of their children. I've been wanting to get a few larger species of Birds such as a Sun Conure, Quaker Parrot, and possibly an African Grey.

Congradulations on the upcoming birth of your baby. Well anyway keep us updated on how things are going. :)

Thanks PB. I've had the anemone now for about a month and a half, give or take a few days. He was pretty small when I got him, but very healthy. Evidently I was feeding him the wrong foods, and he shrunk quite a bit. We have started feeding him silversides daily, and it made a remarkable difference. I also took all the corals out and put them in the 10 gallon I just started. I was worried about the corals poisoning him.

One clownfish in particular really bonded to the bta. It wasn't a few days before he wouldn't go 2 inches from it. The other one stayed close by, and I have a feeling that's because they we're a bonded pair, and not because he liked the BTA.

That's cool you have so many budgies. Very intelligent bird. sun conures are REALLY loud. Very beautiful birds though if you can get past the volume. I really recommend the African Grey. They are absolutely wonderful birds to keep. As far as the quaker parrots go, I can't say. They are illegal to keep here in Tennessee. Evidently our climate mimics their natural habitat so much, that if they we're released somehow, they could easily get a population started.

You'll have to post some pics of your budgies when you get a chance.

Very nice Mazza

Thanks RB. I've got quite a bit of work to do, but hopefully over the next few months I'll be able to finish all of it. I'm hoping to upgrade to a 20 gallon and use the 10 gallon as a sump, or maybe just purchase another 20 gallon and then have 40 gallons of water... then again, why not just buy a 55? Seems more cost effective... LOL. It's never ending sometimes.

I've got a few things on the to-do list to order from Drsfosterandsmith.com. I'll post everything as soon as I get home. I'm planning on buying a few light fixtures, a new pump for the sump, and perhaps some wood to build a new stand.
