I'll start us off...
In the excitement of buying fish for our tanks, it is easy to be impulsive, especially when there are so many great looking fish to choose from. It is important to take the time to research the best fish for our particular tanks, for size, type and compatibility. In doing so, we ensure fewer problems will arise and gain greater satisfaction from our tanks. ;)
Ok, this is a simple one, but I've found it to ring true even being an experienced aquarist.
Patience is everything. When starting a new tank, give it the full amount of time to cycle. When deciding to add fish, add one at a time and let them fully settle in before adding another. When you've got the fish in the bag, let the bag fully adjust to the temperature, then slowly drip tankwater in letting the fish adjust to the PH and KH of your tank water without shocking them. Sometimes it's hard to be patient and wait for the things we want, but in the end, we will be more successful if we do wait. Besides all that, taking the time to do it right the first time, is actually much faster than rushing through doing it wrong twice. :D
An adequately stocked tank is MUCH more enjoyable than an overly stocked one. Being able to enjoy your aquarium is wonderful. Having to do maintenance every other day to keep it going can take away from the enjoyment. Plus, the fish act more natural when they are not overcrowded.
