Title: Acclimating small Nassarius
atnixon - November 21, 2006 12:13 PM (GMT)
Just after a little info on the best way of acclimating quite small snails..Is it best to drip into a small container or keep adding little cups of tank water over a period of an hour or so..
Thanks in advance
Niko

In my opinion it depends on the species and what how long they were being shipped. However it would be best to acclimate all new inhabitants using the drip method as it provides a much slower transition. I've acclimated inverts, coral, and fish using both methods and have not noticed a difference. If the snails are being shipped over a period of a day or longer than I would use the drip method. Although when using both methods you should remember to float the bag in the aquarium first to match the temperature of the water in the bag to the temperature of water in the aquarium and leave the lights off for a few hours after you add the inhabitants to the tank. The most important things to match between both water sources is the temperature, pH, and Specific Gravity.
Btw do you know how to perform both methods? because if you don't I could explain them to you or give you a few web pages that describe the methods. I'm not sure if you've kept Nassarius snails before but you are going to love them. They roam around the tank, bury themselves into the sand, and when you feed the tank they will emerge from the sand.

I have some, they dont do a very good job in cleaning in my opinion but they are great scavengers. I have about 100 of them in my 29 gallon tank, but half of them died due to the hermits stealing the shells.

Cheers PerfectBlue and R33f...many thanks for your comments...
Well, they were given to me by a friend...They arrived in an airtight bag and they were wrapped in tissue paper type envelope soaked in salt water..Dont know if this is how they should be sent to someone, but as soon as they arrived, i bobbed out of work to home and acclimated them straight away, they seem very happy now in their new surroundings...
Please send me some link PB about acclimating..or, if you like, explain the process for me..
Thanks again
Niko

-Don't add an airstone to the bag or bucket.

No problem. How is your tank doing?

Well, it seems to be doing fine..I shall post results from my water tests tonight, not done them for a few days. I have been to my fish shop today and reserved a pair of tank raised false clowns....They are happy to keep them there untill i ask for them, which is goodof them really...
They have some lovely fish at the shop, but they are insistant on keeping tangs which are about 3.5 inches long in tiny tanks, hate to seem them that way...powder blues and regal tangs as well ( my fav's )...All be it, they look in great condition as i know they have had them a while..

Yeah Tangs are one of my favorite marine fish but infortunately they require a large tank. As for favorite Tangs mine would have to be Scopas, Convict, and Naso. One thing to do before purchasing fish from a local fish store is to ask to see the fish take prepared foods. This way you will know that the fish is eating before introducing it to your tank. I try to do this with every fish I buy especially the picky eaters.

yes, i did get them to feed the pair while i was watching, i know its always good practice to watch them eat....suppose it also gives us a little re-assurance before we take them home...

Hiya PB and anyone else who is following this thread.. As you asked earlier PB how the tank is coming along...Well, here are tonight water test results...
PH - 8.4
Ammonia - 0.0
NitrITE - 0.0
NitrATE - 10
Salinity - 1.024
Looks pretty good so far to me..Any feedback on these test results is much appreciated from anyone who views this...
