r33f-boy - August 16, 2006 01:26 AM (GMT)
Well, My b-day is coming up in 1 month and 5 days. I'm so excited I can't wait. I got everything planned out from what I would want. And yes, they are all related to fishes. Here is also who is giving me this stuff.

400 watt MH set(dad)
new powerheads(Myself)
make a 10 gallon refugium (myself)
Glass drill bits (brother)
BTA(My best friend)
More live rocks(myself)
Salt Mix (Myself)

Most of these things I'm going to be getting or making myself b/c of the money from the b-day present. I really really can't wait. I'll try to post a picture of my tank if these stuff happens. But my MH kit and refuguim is going to happen forreals. I cant wait.

Hiya R33f-boy,

Why are you going with 400w MH?
You could get by with less and save some money/heat/electricity.
I now have 150w MH and 65w Actinic over mine and could put anything
in there. There are heating issues with that much MH. Mine has gone up
1 degree since the switch. Not much, but still have to fight to keep it down.
So not only will you be paying for the fixture and the electricity to run the
light, but you will be paying for the electricity to keep it cool. ie; fans.

In a 29g 200w-250w would be more than enough to keep anything you
want, including light hungry clams, and keep the costs down.

Think about it, more $ for other stuff... :D

I agree. A 400watt metal halide system is a bit overkill for a 29g tank. I would go with probably a 250watt metal halide system for your tank as that will allow you to keep SPS, Clams, and the BTA anemone. You could probably get away with a 150watt metal halide and you could supplement it with PC, T5HO, or VHO lighting.

Are you thinking of a retrofit kit or fixture?

I was thinking about a retrofit kit. But i did do some thinking, lIk you said a 400 watt might be too much. I may order myself a dual 175 mh kit.

I was planning to buy the 400 watt because it was kind of cheap. http://cgi.ebay.com/400-450watt-METAL-HALI...1QQcmdZViewItem
Is it ok if I purchased this and used a different bulb, Or do I need to just buy a different kit so it will be better?

I'm excited for your refugeeum. I'd love to put one on my 29g tank. As for the lighting... a price that good is hard to pass up. Though it may be more expensive down the line.

Ok, SinceMH uses alot of energy, is it ok for me to order a 4-lamp vho kit. It cost 149 bucks to house 4 VHO bulb. It's able to be mount onto anything, like a 24 inch hood or a 48 inch hood. I might be getting the VHO kit instead of the MH kit, Since it uses less energy and burns way way way cooler. Thanks. All advice apreciated.
