Title: Anemone
r33f-boy - August 9, 2006 08:27 PM (GMT)
Well now i remember wat to say. I want to get a bubble tip anemone. I currently have 130 watt of pc on my 29 gallon tank with an extra house bulb that has 40 watts and contains 6k. I was wondering if the anemone can survive a month in this light since it's going to be 1 month b4 i can get metal halide. And if I do its going to be a 400 watt fixture. Thanks alot.

My opinion would be to just wait until you have the metal halide fixture before purchasing a anemone. The trouble is that if you introduced the anemone when you have PC lighting then you would have to acclimate the anemone to stronger light.
Bubble Tip Anemones are one of the easiest to keep anemones but still require a great deal of care. What size tank is it and how long has it been set up?

The tank is a 30 gallon, Been up about 11 months now. I'm going to try some zoathids first to see if I can make them survive. And if i can then I'll go buy an anemone.

Would a 20k be better or a 10k be better.

I would recommend keeping some easier corals first before even thinking about getting an Anemone. Anemones are really difficult to care for so it would best if you did plenty of research before attempting a Anemone.
As for what Kelvin rating is best just choose one the looks the best to you. From what I've read a lower K rating between 6500-10000K will provide the best growth out of your coral but most people don't choose these K ratings because they are somewhat yellow. If your not going to run actinics I would personally go with either a 14K or 20K.

I think I am going to use my PC fixture as aticnics. I'm going to order two 65 watts of atinic blue. For my PC and a 10k 400 watt MH, when I have the money. And, Zoathids and mushrooms as some starter coral.

Ok, Here is why I want to get the anemone now. I just want to get the anemone now b/c it's on sale. I don't want to wait since I may have to pay like 20 bucks more now. So if i get the anemone now, will it be ok under Pc lighting. And how do you acclimate it to MH?

My honest opinion is that you shouldn't attempt to keep an anemone just yet until you have had more experience with keeping corals first. As I have said many times they are very sensitive when it comes to water parameters. If you are looking for something for your Clownfish to host in there are corals that they would host in such as Torch, Hammer, etc.
What I mean by acclimating them to light is just like when you acclimate fish from the lfs water to your water you have to do the same for light. Going from PowerCompact lighting to Metal Halide is a big change of intensity so it is best to get them used to the light very slowly. You could either place them in a shady spot and slowly move them out to where there is more light. The best way in my opinion is just to place screen(forgot which kind) in many layers above your tank blocking the light from the coral and then each few days remove a single layer.

Ok, thanks then PB. I will then attempt to buy some corals first. I have found out that my lfs that sells the bubble tip uses VHO for their anemone. So if I already have my metal halide set already on my tank, do I still have to acclimate the anemone to the light, or is it ok to just drop it. (As acclimated to the water first.)

Ok, I have bought myself about 30 polyps+ of some zoathids. I dont know what kind.
What do they eat?Water current?
light is a 130 pc. If there is anything else plz add in.
Corals were for sale so I got my zoathids for just 10 bucks :D

They don't need to be target fed but may occasionally catch leftovers from feeding your fish. Low to medium flow will be fine and I would personally go with around 20x turnover. How much flow do you have in your tank?
r33f-boy - August 13, 2006 03:56 PM (GMT)
I have one aquatic garden 600 (200 gph), and a fluval 90 gph.

You might want more flow in your tank then you currently have now especially since you are starting to add coral. I would get another powerheads rated at around 300gph. I like to use Maxijet powerheads and I've also heard that Aquaclear powerheads are good also.

Well, Im waiting for aquatraders to get their powerhead back in stock, since I'm going to be ordering two 315 gph powerhead.
