Title: Long Nose ButterFly
danj - July 27, 2006 02:06 AM (GMT)
I would like to buy one of these fish, but i am not totally sure if it will be ok with my feather dusters. I read a small article that says they will eat tube worms.
They are compatible with the rest of my fish. Clown, Damsel,Chromeis,Dottyback and Blennie.
Any words of wisdom on this.

From what I've read they have the reputation of nipping feather dusters and eating inverts. I'm not sure about coral but it is always a possibility. They would be a great fish for a FOWLR tank and you can house peaceful fish with them.
What size tank is this?

This is a 75 gal tank. But if u think that this fish will eat my dusters then i will not get it. What i need is a reef safe larger fish. All my fish are small and my wife would like a larger one. But i need to find one that will not eat the polyps i have and get along with my other tank fish.
Thanks Perfectblue for the help.

I wouldn't consider Butterflyfish completely reef safe as there is a chance that they may nip corals as well as attack inverts. I have seen many people who house Butterflyfish in reef tanks without a problem but you always run the risk of loosing coral or inverts.
So you would like a larger fish to act as a centerpiece fish? and how many of each species of fish do you have in your tank currently?

I have Fish 1Clown 1Yellowtail Damsel 1Dottyback 2Green Chromis 1Blenny
Inverts 2Skunk cleaner shrimp 1Condy Anemone 3Feather Dusters 1Brittlle Star
Corals 2different types of Polyps. Button polyps and i believe yellow star polyps.
This tank is 75gal with 17 gal sump and a 5gal fuge. Approx. total 90gal of water.
Coralife skimmer 30lbs live sand and about 30lbs of live rock.
And several crabs and snails.

How large of a fish are you thinking of adding to your tank?

I dont want one that will get over 8 to 10 inches. I think i may try a yellow tang again.
The last one i got dyed in two day. But i think that was because of a damsel that would not leave it alone. Kept on picking at it.
If u have a better suggestion please let me know.

A Yellow Tang is an option but may I suggest looking into a smaller species of Tang such as a Kole, Bristletooth Tomini, or Cheveron? A small Dwarf Angelfish would work also in your tank and although they may nip corals and sessile inverts many people have had success with keeping them in reef tanks. Most Dwarf Angels only reach 3-6 inches in length but are very active and colorful. My favorite are Flame, Coral Beauty, Potters, and Eibli.

I have purchased a Coral Beauty Angelfish. And also one Emerald crab. I will give it some time and hope all goes well.

Sounds good. Coral Beauty Angels are very colorful and should make a great addition to your tank. How is it behaving towards your coral?

So far the Angel does not seem to bother the corals. I only have the button polyps and some star polyps. It is a very nice looking fish. I will have to get some pics of it.

I have not had any problem with the Angel and Corals. However the Angel does seem to stay hid in the live rock. It does not come out very much. Is this normal for an angel fish?

How long have you had him? If he was just introduced to your tank he is probably adjusting to his new environment which takes time.

I just put it in a few days ago. Today the angel fish seems to be more active and is swimming around more. So i think i just need to give it some time.
Thanks for the help PB. I think this angel fish is just what we needed to top of my tank. :)
